인생의 갈림길은 생각보다 단순한 질문에서 시작된다. 천국과 지옥, 승리와 패배, 복과 저주를 가르는 기준은 결국 “나는 지금 어디에 있는가”에 달려 있다. 성경은 그 답을 분명히 제시한다. 사람이 그리스도 안에 있는가, 아니면 그리스도 밖에 있는가가 본질적인 문제다.
아담이 범죄한 후 동산 숲속에 숨어 있었을 때, 하나님께서 던지신 질문은 지금 우리에게도 여전히 유효하다. “네가 어디 있느냐.”(창 3:9) 오늘날 세상 역시 둘로 나뉜다. 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접한 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람이다. 그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 ‘그리스도 안에 있음’을 확신할 수 있을까. 그 분명한 표지가 있다.
첫째, 죄와 사망에서 해방된 자유다(롬 8:1~2, 32). 그리스도 안에 있는 사람은 단순히 종교적 위안을 얻는 데 그치지 않는다. 그는 죄의 정죄에서 벗어나 참된 자유를 누린다. 이 자유는 환경에 좌우되지 않는다. 오히려 고난 속에서도 기쁨을 잃지 않게 한다(행 5:41). 사도 베드로가 처형을 앞둔 감옥에서도 깊이 잠들 수 있었던 이유, 그리고 풍랑 속에서도 평안히 주무셨던 예수님의 모습(마 8:24)은 이 자유가 어디서 오는지를 보여 준다. 하나님 안에 있는 자는 상황을 넘어서는 평안을 누린다.
둘째, 하나님과의 연합, 곧 ‘하나 됨’이다. 신앙은 개인적인 체험을 넘어 공동체적 열매로 나타난다. 다양한 사람들이 모인 교회가 하나 될 수 있는 이유는 성령께서 그들을 그리스도 안에서 묶어 주시기 때문이다(요 17:21-23). 진정한 연합은 단순한 조직적 일치가 아니라, 서로의 기쁨과 슬픔을 함께 나누는 삶에서 드러난다. 즐거워하는 자와 함께 즐거워하고, 우는 자와 함께 우는 공동체(롬 12:15) 이것이 하나님과 하나 된 사람들의 모습이다.
셋째, 하나님의 소원을 품는 삶이다. 하나님과 하나가 된 사람은 더 이상 자신의 욕망만을 좇지 않는다. 하나님의 뜻이 그의 삶의 방향이 된다(빌 3:14). 성경이 말하는 하나님의 소원은 분명하다. 모든 사람이 구원을 받고 진리를 아는 데 이르는 것이다(딤전 2:4). 이 소원을 품은 사람은 자연스럽게 복음을 전하고, 교회의 사역에 헌신하게 된다. 그의 삶은 점점 하나님이 기뻐하시는 방향으로 흘러간다.
결국 중요한 것은 외형적인 신앙의 모습이 아니다. 내가 지금 어디에 서 있는가, 과연 그리스도 안에 있는가를 점검하는 일이다. 죄에서 자유한 기쁨이 있는지, 하나님과 하나 된 사랑이 있는지, 그리고 하나님의 소원을 향한 열정이 있는지 돌아보아야 한다.
이 세 가지가 우리 안에 살아 있다면, 우리는 분명 그리스도 안에 있는 사람이다. 그리고 그 자리는 어떤 상황 속에서도 흔들리지 않는 참된 생명의 자리다.
If you are in Christ
Life's greatest turning points often begin with a surprisingly simple question. The line between heaven and hell, victory and defeat, blessing and curse ultimately comes down to this: Where am I right now? The Bible gives a clear answer. The essential question is whether a person is in Christ or outside of Christ.
After Adam sinned and hid among the trees in the garden, God asked him a question that still echoes today: "Where are you?" (Genesis 3:9). The same question confronts us now. Humanity is divided into two groups: those who have received Jesus Christ as their Savior and those who have not. So how can we know with confidence that we are in Christ? Scripture points to several clear marks.
First, there is freedom from sin and death (Romans 8:1-2, 32). A person who is in Christ receives far more than religious comfort. They are set free from the condemnation of sin and experience genuine freedom. This freedom is not dependent on circumstances. Rather, it enables believers to remain joyful even in suffering (Acts 5:41). Peter was able to sleep peacefully in prison on the eve of his execution, and Jesus slept soundly in the midst of a raging storm (Matthew 8:24). Their peace reveals the source of true freedom. Those who abide in God experience a peace that transcends their circumstances.
Second, there is union with God—becoming one with Him. Faith is more than a private spiritual experience; it bears fruit within a community. The church, made up of people from many different backgrounds, is able to live in unity because the Holy Spirit binds them together in Christ (John 17:21–23). True unity is not merely organizational agreement but a shared life in which believers rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). This is the evidence of people who have become one with God.
Third, there is a life that embraces God's heart and purpose. Those who are united with God no longer live primarily to satisfy their own desires. Instead, God's will becomes the direction of their lives (Philippians 3:14). Scripture clearly reveals God's desire: that all people be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). Those who share God's heart naturally proclaim the gospel and devote themselves to the work of His church. Their lives increasingly reflect what pleases God.
Ultimately, what matters is not the outward appearance of faith but where we truly stand. Are we genuinely in Christ? We should examine ourselves: Do we have the joy of freedom from sin? Do we demonstrate the love that comes from being united with God? Do we possess a passion for God's purpose?
If these three marks are alive within us, we can be confident that we are in Christ. And that is the place of true life—a place that remains secure and unshaken, no matter what circumstances we face.
