예수 그리스도께서 죄인 된 우리를 하나님과의 화평하게 하시기 위해서 대속의 십자가를 지셨다(엡 2:14–16). 그리고 우리 그리스도인들에게 화목하게 하는 직분을 주셨다(고후 5:18–19).

그러므로 다른 사람들과의 화평을 깨는 자는 누구든지 주를 보지 못한다(히 12:14). 하나님께 예물을 드리는 일보다 우선하는 것이 형제와의 화목이다(마 5:23–24).

형제자매들과의 화평이 하나님께 드리는 연보와 기도보다 우선임을 기억하자. 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매이고, 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀린다(마 18:18).

그래서 지각이 있는 그리스도인들은 하나님께서 정해 주신 우선순위를 따른다. 우리는 야곱의 하나님을 믿는다. 그는 그의 형 에서가 사냥을 하고 돌아올 때에 지치고 배가 고픈 그의 약점을 노려서 팥죽 한 그릇으로 장자의 명분을 샀다. 그리고 이어서 부친의 눈이 어두운 약점을 노리고 장자가 받을 축복의 기도까지 받았다.

이를 알게 된 에서가 자기를 죽이려 하자 외삼촌 집으로 도망을 간다. 20여 년 후에는 자신이 원하는 여인들과 결혼하고 자녀들도 낳아 거부가 되어 고향으로 돌아오는 길에, 에서가 얍복강 건너편에서 사백 명의 군사와 함께 야곱을 죽이려고 기다리고 있다는 소식을 듣는다. 이번에도 역시 인간적인 수단과 방법을 사용한다.

그는 많은 짐승 떼를 에서에게 보낸다(창 32:13–15). 그 후에 모든 사람들을 먼저 강을 건너보내고 혼자 남아서 하나님께 살려 달라고 기도한다. 그때 그는 여호와로부터 야곱의 이름을 이스라엘로 개명이 된다.

그가 새 이름을 가진 후에 강을 건넜을 때 놀라운 일이 일어난다. 자기를 죽일 줄로 알았던 에서가 달려와서 그의 목을 끌어안고 울더니, “이 험한 광야 길을 내가 인도해 주겠다”고 나선 것이다(창 33:12).

야곱이 먼저 회개하고 변하여 새사람이 되니 하나님께서 에서의 마음을 변화시키신 것이다. 사망에 이르는 육신의 생각에서 생명과 평안을 얻게 하는 생각으로의 변화가 진정한 회개이다(롬 8:6).

천국은 회개한 자에게 가까워지고(막 1:15), 회개에 합당한 열매는 형제자매들과의 화평에 있다. 화평이 우선이다. 우리 모두 화평을 위해 소금이 되자(막 9:50).

Peace Comes First

Jesus Christ bore the cross of atonement to reconcile us, sinful people, to God and bring us peace with Him (Eph. 2:14–16). He also gave us Christians the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18–19).

Therefore, whoever destroys peace with others will not see the Lord (Heb. 12:14). Reconciliation with our brothers and sisters takes priority over offering a gift to God (Matt. 5:23–24).

Let us remember that peace with our brothers and sisters takes priority over offerings and prayer to God. “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matt. 18:18).

Therefore, Christians who have discernment follow the priorities that God has established. We believe in the God of Jacob. When his brother Esau returned from hunting, tired and hungry, Jacob took advantage of his weakness and bought his birthright for a bowl of stew. Then, taking advantage of his father’s failing eyesight, he also received the blessing that was intended for the firstborn.

When Esau learned what Jacob had done, he wanted to kill him, so Jacob fled to his uncle’s household. More than twenty years later, after marrying the women he desired, having children, and becoming wealthy, Jacob began his journey back to his homeland. Along the way, he heard that Esau was waiting for him on the other side of the Jabbok River with four hundred men, intending to kill him. Once again, Jacob resorted to human means and methods.

He sent large herds of animals ahead to Esau (Gen. 32:13–15). Then he sent everyone else across the river first and remained alone, praying to God to save him. At that time, the Lord changed Jacob’s name to Israel.

After receiving his new name, Jacob crossed the river, and something remarkable happened. Esau, whom Jacob had expected to kill him, ran toward him, embraced him around the neck, and wept. Then Esau offered to go ahead of him and guide him through the difficult wilderness journey (Gen. 33:12).

When Jacob first repented, changed, and became a new person, God changed Esau’s heart. A change from a mind set on the flesh, which leads to death, to a mind that brings life and peace is true repentance (Rom. 8:6).

The kingdom of heaven draws near to those who repent (Mark 1:15), and the fruit worthy of repentance is found in peace with our brothers and sisters. Peace comes first. Let us all become salt for the sake of peace (Mark 9:50).
