싱가포르의 센토사섬에 가면 국립해양박물관이 있다. 나는 거기서 바다에서 나는 모든 것들을 보았다. 그중에서 내 마음을 사로잡았던 것은 ‘진주를 캐낸 조개껍질’이었다.

오색찬란하고 값비싼 진주는 저절로 생겨난 것이 아니었다. 조개껍질 안쪽에 진주층(晉州層)이 있다. 거기서 나온 물질이 모이고 쌓여 굳은 것이 진주가 된 것이다. 진주는 조개의 눈물의 결정체인 것이다.

전에 없던 교회가 개척으로 생겨날 때에는 개척자와 함께한 헌신자들의 피와 땀과 눈물의 결정체이다. 주 하나님을 사랑하되 자기의 목숨을 바친 자들의 헌신으로 이루어진다.

내가 서울의 빈민촌이던 봉천동에 천막을 치고 개척을 시작한 지 한 달여 만에 땅주인이 나타나서 한 달 동안의 여유를 줄 테니 자진 철거를 하라고 했다. 그때 삼양라면 공장에 다니던 처녀가 그동안 모아 놓았던 돈 전액을 하나님께 바침으로 교회를 이전하게 되었다.

근검하고 믿음 좋은 청녀가 결혼 후 곧 미국으로 이민을 떠났다. 20년 후에 내가 뉴욕에 부흥회를 갔을 때 신문을 보고 나를 찾아왔다. 남편은 모 교회의 장로님이었고 본인은 권사님이었다.

뉴욕에 큰 가게 두 개를 운영하는 부자였다. 영이신 하나님은 보이지 않아도 그 하나님께서 함께하신 자들을 볼 수 있었다. 눈물을 흘리며 씨를 뿌린 자에게 기쁨의 단을 거두게 하시는 하나님이시었다(시 126:5~6).

주 안에서의 수고는 결코 헛되지 않는다(고전 15:58). 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져서 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다(요 12:24). 믿음은 하나님의 선물이다(엡 2:8).

교회에서 이성주의, 합리주의, 그리고 머리가 영리한 자들은 자기 이익을 추구하는 이해타산이 빨라서 헌신과 봉사를 하지 못한다. 그래서 십자가의 도는 멸망할 자들에게는 미련한 것이요, 구원을 얻는 자들에게는 하나님의 지혜와 능력이 된다(고전 1:18).

지혜가 제일이다(잠 4:7). 우리 모두 진주를 캐낸 조개가 되자.

A Pearl-bearing Shell

When you go to Sentosa Island in Singapore, there is a national maritime museum. There, I saw all kinds of things that come from the sea. Among them, what captured my heart was a “shell from which a pearl had been harvested.”

The brilliantly colored and precious pearl did not come into existence by itself. Inside the shell is a layer called the nacre, from which substances gather, accumulate, and harden to form a pearl. A pearl is, in a sense, the crystallization of an oyster’s tears.

When a church that did not exist before is established through church planting, it is the crystallization of the blood, sweat, and tears of the pioneers and those who devoted themselves alongside them. It is built through the dedication of those who love the Lord God so much that they are willing to give even their lives for Him.

About a month after I began planting a church by putting up a tent in Bongcheon-dong, a poor neighborhood in Seoul, the landowner appeared. He told me that he would give us one month, but that we would have to remove the tent ourselves and leave.

At that time, a young woman who worked at the Samyang Ramen factory offered all the money she had saved to God. Because of her sacrificial offering, we were able to move the church to another location.

This young woman was frugal and strong in her faith. Soon after she married, she immigrated to the United States. Twenty years later, when I went to New York for a revival meeting, she saw my name in the newspaper and came to find me. Her husband was an elder at a church, and she herself was a deaconess.

They had become wealthy, operating two large stores in New York. Although God, who is Spirit, cannot be seen, I could see the people with whom God had been present. He was the God who allows those who sow in tears to reap with songs of joy (Psalm 126:5-6).

Our labor in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). When a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces many seeds (John 12:24). Faith is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8).

In the church, those who rely on rationalism and human reasoning, especially those who are clever and quick-minded, can be so quick to calculate their own interests and benefits that they fail to devote themselves to service and sacrifice. Therefore, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved, it is the wisdom and power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).

Wisdom is supreme (Proverbs 4:7).

Let us all become oysters that produce pearls.
