사도행전은 교회의 역사서이다. 예수께서 “내가 내 교회를 세우리라”라고 예언하신 말씀(마 16:18)은 성령이 강림하심으로써 이루어졌으며, 주님의 교회가 세워졌다(행 2:1–4).

예수님을 구주로 믿는 사람들에게 붙여진 이름은 다양하다. 처음에는 ‘믿는 사람들’(행 2:44)이라고 불렸고, 두 번째로는 ‘형제들’(행 6:3)이라고 불렸다. 세 번째로는 세상 사람들과 구별된 사람들이라는 의미에서 ‘성도’(행 9:13)라고 불렸다. 네 번째로는 예수 그리스도를 선생님으로 알고 그분에게 가르침을 받으며 따르는 자라는 의미에서 ‘제자’(행 11:26 전반부)라고 불렸다. 그리고 다섯 번째로 비로소 ‘그리스도인’(행 11:26 후반부)이라는 이름이 붙여졌다.

그리스도인이란 그리스도에게 속한 자요, 그리스도를 닮은 자라는 뜻이다. ‘비로소’라는 표현은 그리스도에게 속한 자로 살아가던 사람들이 이제야 처음으로 ‘그리스도인’이라는 이름으로 불리게 되었다는 의미를 담고 있다.

그리스도 예수님을 닮은 자가 그리스도인이다. 예수 그리스도처럼 성령에 매인 자로 살아가는 사람(눅 4:18–19)에게 붙여진 가장 아름다운 이름이 바로 ‘그리스도인’이다.

성품으로는 따뜻하시고 온유하셨던 예수 그리스도(마 11:29)를 닮아야 하며, 기도는 아버지의 뜻을 구하셨던 예수 그리스도를 닮은 그리스도인이 되어야 한다(마 26:39).

바울은 자신이 그리스도를 본받는 자라고 말했다(고전 11:1). 그는 성령에 매여 성령께서 인도하시는 대로 살아갔으며, 환난과 결박이 기다리고 있는 예루살렘으로 가겠다고 말했다(행 20:22–24). 또한 그곳에서 죽는 것까지도 각오했다고 고백했다(행 21:13).

예수님께서는 부활과 승천, 그리고 하나님 아버지께서 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 주실 것을 바라보시며 고난의 십자가를 지셨다(히 12:2). 바울은 바로 그러한 예수님을 닮은 사람이 되었다.

예수를 믿는 사람들은 모두 그리스도를 닮은 성숙한 그리스도인이 되어야 한다. 또한 성령에 매인 자가 되어야 한다. ‘매이다’와 ‘잡히다’는 피동사이다. 주동자는 성령님이시며, 나는 피동자가 되어야 한다.

성령에 매인 그리스도인은 하나님의 말씀에 붙잡히고(행 18:5), 또한 예수 그리스도께 붙잡힌 자로서(빌 3:12–14) 주의 일을 한다. 자신을 날마다 부인하고 주님을 따르는 사람이 비로소 진정한 그리스도인이다.

Finally, a Christian

The Book of Acts is a history of the church. Jesus’ prophetic declaration, “I will build my church” (Matt. 16:18), was fulfilled with the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the Lord’s church was established (Acts 2:1–4).

Those who believed in Jesus as their Savior were given various names. At first, they were called “believers” (Acts 2:44). Second, they were called “brothers” (Acts 6:3). Third, they were called “saints,” meaning those who were set apart from the people of the world (Acts 9:13). Fourth, they were called “disciples,” meaning those who recognized Jesus Christ as their Teacher, received His teaching, and followed Him (Acts 11:26, first half). And fifth, they were finally given the name “Christians” (Acts 11:26, second half).

A Christian is one who belongs to Christ and seeks to resemble Christ. The expression “finally” conveys the meaning that those who had been living as people belonging to Christ were now, for the first time, called “Christians.”

A Christian is one who resembles Christ Jesus. “Christian” is the most beautiful name given to those who live, like Jesus Christ, as people bound by the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18–19).

In character, we should resemble Jesus Christ, who was warm and gentle (Matt. 11:29), and in prayer, we should become Christians who follow the example of Jesus Christ, who sought the will of the Father (Matt. 26:39).

Paul said that he was an imitator of Christ (1 Cor. 11:1). Bound by the Holy Spirit, he lived according to the Spirit’s leading and declared that he would go to Jerusalem, where hardship and imprisonment awaited him (Acts 20:22–24). He also confessed that he was prepared even to die there (Acts 21:13).

Jesus bore the cross of suffering, looking ahead to His resurrection and ascension and to the authority that God the Father would give Him over heaven and earth (Heb. 12:2). Paul became a person who followed the example of that very Jesus.

Everyone who believes in Jesus should become a mature Christian who resembles Christ. We must also become people who are bound by the Holy Spirit. The Korean words translated as “bound” and “taken hold of” are passive verbs. The one who takes the initiative is the Holy Spirit, and I must become the one who willingly yields to Him.

A Christian who is bound by the Holy Spirit is held by the Word of God (Acts 18:5) and, as one who has been taken hold of by Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:12–14), carries out the Lord’s work. The person who denies himself daily and follows the Lord is finally a true Christian.
