신약성경에서 주님께서 귀하게 들어서 쓰신 분들은 공통점이 있다. 두 가지 능력을 갖춘 분들이다. 첫째는, 하나님께서 말세에 약속하신 성령으로 충만함을 받은 자들이니 주님께서 세상을 떠나시기 직전에 하신 위로부터 임하신 성령의 능력이다(눅24:49).

두번째는, 풍부에 처할 줄도 알고 빈궁에 처할 줄도 아는 적응력이다. 바울은 이 적응력에 대한 일체의 비결을 배웠다(빌4:12~13). 이 두가지의 능력을 가진 자는 독수리가 두날개를 치며 하늘 위로 올라감 같아서 항상 주안에서기뻐하고 쉬지않고 기도하며 범사에 감사함으로 하나니의 뜻을 이룬다(살전5:16~18).

베드로는 세상 학문이 많지 않고 은과 금도 없었으나 자기에게 있는 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 나면서부터 앉은뱅이 된자를 일어나서 걷게 한다(행3장).하나님의 나라는 말에 있지 않고 능력에 있다(고전4:20).

교회는 영적인 사회다. 그래서 잘난이 똑똑이들에게는 십자가의 도가 미련해 보인다. 그러나 구원을 받은 자 들에게는 능력이고 지혜다(고전1:18~29).

소아시아에 있는 일곱 교회들 중에서 경제적으로 가장 가난했던 서머나 교회는 영적으로는 가장 부자들이었다. 그래서 주님께서는 그들에게 충성을 부탁하신다(계2:8~10).

두가지 능력을 가진 자들은 자기들의 죄를 대신 담당해 주신 예수 그리스도의 십자가외에는 자랑을 하지 않는다. 그들은 예수와 함께 죽고 예수와 함께 사는 것을 알기에 모든 것이 주님의 은혜임을 안다.

그래서 살아도 주를 위해 죽어도 주를 위해 죽는다. 이런 자들은 주님께서 악한자들이 손도 대지 못하도로 지켜 주신다(요일5:18). 우리 모두 두 가지 능력을 소유한 자들이 되어서 평생 소원이 주님의 기쁨이 되는자가 되자.


Those whom the Lord used mightily in the New Testament share a common characteristic. They possessed two essential abilities.

The first was being filled with the Holy Spirit, whom God promised for the last days. This is the power of the Holy Spirit from on high, which the Lord promised just before He departed from this world (Luke 24:49).

The second was the ability to adapt—to know how to live in times of abundance and in times of need. The apostle Paul testified that he had learned the secret of living under every circumstance (Philippians 4:12–13).

Those who possess these two abilities are like eagles soaring upward on two powerful wings. They rejoice always in the Lord, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in every circumstance, thereby accomplishing the will of God (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).

Peter was not highly educated by worldly standards, nor did he possess silver or gold. Yet, in the name of Jesus Christ, whom he did possess, he raised a man who had been lame from birth and enabled him to walk (Acts 3). The kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power (1 Corinthians 4:20).

The church is a spiritual community. Therefore, to those who pride themselves on worldly wisdom and intelligence, the message of the cross appears to be foolishness. But to those who are being saved, it is the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:18–29).

Among the seven churches in Asia Minor, the church in Smyrna was the poorest economically, yet it was the richest spiritually. Therefore, the Lord exhorted them to remain faithful, even unto death (Revelation 2:8–10).

Those who possess these two abilities boast in nothing except the cross of Jesus Christ, who bore their sins in their place. Because they understand what it means to die with Christ and to live with Christ, they recognize that everything is the result of the Lord's grace.

Therefore, whether they live or die, they do so for the Lord. The Lord protects such people so that the evil one cannot even lay a hand on them (1 John 5:18).

May we all become people who possess these two abilities, so that the lifelong desire of our hearts will be to bring joy to our Lord.
