Living Out Love

Everyone wants to be happy. Happiness is a state in which the desires of both the mind and body are satisfied. Yet God, who is the source of all blessings, does not give us happiness as a finished product. Instead, He teaches us how to become happy. That way is to practice love.

In Greek, there are four different words for love, depending on the object of that love. Three of these describe conditional and limited forms of love—love between people.

The first is the love between a man and a woman, especially the love between husband and wife. This love is called eros. It is a fundamental kind of love that extends to those who are connected to us. When a wife is loved and cherished, her parents are also respected, and her siblings become dear to us. Likewise, when a husband is loved, his parents are respected and his younger siblings become dear to us. It is also a blessing when the children born to a married couple resemble their father or mother. Therefore, God instructs husbands to love their wives throughout their lives (Ecclesiastes 9:9).

The second is love based on family or blood relationships. This is also called familial love, or storge in Greek. A Canaanite woman who had a daughter possessed by a cruel demon endured every kind of humiliation because she desperately wanted the Lord to heal her daughter. The Lord praised her for her great faith and healed her daughter (Matthew 15:21–28).

The third is the love between friends, called philia in Greek. David was able to escape death at the hands of King Saul because Jonathan, Saul’s son, loved David as he loved his own life (1 Samuel 18:1). Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13–14).

The final kind of love is the love of the holy God for sinners. This is called agape. It is unconditional and perfect love. We committed the sin, yet Jesus Christ took the punishment that we deserved. This demonstrates that only this kind of love is truly perfect (Romans 5:8).

Joseph experienced great suffering after being rejected by his brothers and sold into Egypt. Yet later, he forgave the very brothers who had sought to harm him and cared for them (Genesis 45:4–8; 50:19–21). Because Joseph came to understand God’s grace and providence at work in his life, he was able to show love even to those who had done evil against him.

First John 4:18 says, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” I believe that we are able to practice agape love when God’s love fills us, when our relationship with Him grows closer, and when we deeply understand the grace that the Lord has given us. Those who have experienced God’s perfect love are no longer controlled by fear; instead, they are able to love others with that same love.

As Christians, we should love everyone with the perfect love of God. We must become people who practice love, rather than merely speaking about love. Without putting love into practice, even a person who possesses many spiritual gifts is nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1–3).

The meaning, value, and purpose of our lives ultimately lie in practicing love.
