God Who Protects Us

Before, when the Israelites traveled through the wilderness, the Lord protected and guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21). Even today, God watches over us without slumbering or sleeping (Psalm 121:3–8). Then, what kind of people does God protect?

First, those who take refuge in the Lord (Psalm 16:1).

According to the Law, those who intentionally committed murder were to be executed, but those who killed someone unintentionally could flee to a city of refuge (Numbers 35:11–12). There were three cities of refuge on each side of the Jordan River (Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:7), and these cities foreshadow Jesus Christ. There is no condemnation for anyone who is in Christ, and the Lord protects us from the evil one (1 John 5:18). Therefore, when we encounter difficulties, we should not be afraid or discouraged. Instead, we should pray at all times and in every situation, seeking the Lord’s protection.

Second, those who keep the word of perseverance (Revelation 3:10).

Such people are conscious that they are always in the presence of God and live according to His Word. The psalmist confesses, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). When Potiphar’s wife tempted Joseph, he resisted her temptation, declaring that he could not sin against God (Genesis 39:9). Although he was unjustly imprisoned, through God’s providence he eventually became the governor of Egypt. In the same way, those who treasure God’s Word in their hearts, persevere, and obey Him can maintain their faith even in the midst of difficulties.

Third, those who fulfill the mission of evangelism and teaching.

The Lord commanded His disciples to preach the gospel to all the world and was with them as they carried out this mission (Mark 16:15–20). He also commanded them to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey His Word, and promised to be with them always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:18–20). We, too, can experience the Lord’s presence when we faithfully fulfill this mission.

Let us all take refuge in the Lord, keep His Word with perseverance, and faithfully fulfill the mission of evangelism and teaching, so that we may receive God’s protection until the end of the age.
