A Deep and Earnest Expectation
The Apostle Paul was preaching the gospel when he was arrested and imprisoned in Rome. Nevertheless, the desire burning within his heart and mind was to honor Christ. This desire was given to him by Christ, who dwelled within him (Philippians 1:20–21).
The hearts of all Christians, including pastors and ministers, should be like his. Although our physical bodies may be confined to prison by earthly authorities, our hearts and minds, which transcend time and space, cannot be imprisoned.
When Paul was physically free, he traveled from place to place preaching the gospel. But when his body was imprisoned, he continued to proclaim the gospel through his writing. He was convinced that Jesus Christ alone is the one and only Savior.
This was the reason and purpose of his life. Why should such a life be found only in Paul? We believe in the same Jesus and have received the same Holy Spirit; therefore, our lives should be like his.
Naaman, the commander of the army of Aram, was healed of his leprosy after washing himself seven times in the Jordan River because of the testimony of an unnamed Israelite servant girl (2 Kings 5). Likewise, Caleb, at the age of eighty-five, fought against the descendants of Anak, the giants of the land of Canaan, and after defeating them, he and his descendants took possession of Hebron, their land (Joshua 14).
Jesus fed five thousand men with five barley loaves and two fish that were offered by an unnamed child, and twelve baskets of leftovers were collected (John 6). All of these were good deeds performed by people whose lives were devoted to the glory of God.
Their deep and earnest expectation and hope was to honor Christ above all else. Such people, with this sincere desire, are mature Christians. Whatever we do, we should live according to this deep and earnest expectation and hope: that everything we do should be for the glory of God.
Those who live in this way can be confident that Jesus Christ, who was raised from the dead and has been given all authority in heaven and on earth, will always be with them until the end of the age (Matthew 28:18–20).
