성령으로 거듭난 그리스도인에게는 간절한 기다림이 있다. 단순히 시간이 지나기를 바라는 기다림이 아니라, 마음 깊은 곳에서부터 애타게 바라는 ‘고대(苦待)’다. 그 대상은 분명하다. 바로 예수 그리스도의 재림이다. 이 고대함은 막연한 기대가 아니라, 장차 우리가 맞이할 완전한 변화에 대한 확신에서 비롯된다. 병들고 쇠하며 결국 썩어질 육신이 아니라, 온전하고 신령한 몸으로 변화될 그날을 바라보는 소망이다.
이 소망은 개인적인 차원에 머물지 않는다. 성경은 모든 피조물 또한 이 회복의 날을 함께 고대하고 있다고 말한다(롬 8:19~23). 피조 세계 역시 지금의 한계와 고통에서 벗어나 자유에 이르기를 기다린다(롬 8:21). 그러므로 재림 신앙은 단지 한 개인의 위로가 아니라, 온 창조 세계를 향한 하나님의 구속 완성을 바라보는 거대한 희망이다.
성령으로 거듭난 사람을 가리켜 헬라어로 ‘안드로포스(ἄνθρωπος)’라고 부른다. 이는 ‘위를 바라보는 존재’를 뜻한다. 그리스도인은 본질적으로 시선을 위에 두는 사람, 곧 소망을 품고 살아가는 존재다. 그렇기에 이 땅에 발을 딛고 살면서도, 삶의 방향은 언제나 하나님 나라를 향한다.
이러한 소망은 삶의 태도를 바꾼다. 오늘이 인생의 마지막일 수 있다고 여기는 사람은 욕심과 교만에 사로잡혀 살 수 없다. 하나님 앞에 흠 없고 책망받을 것이 없는 모습으로 서기를 바라는 마음이 삶을 절제하게 만들고, 결국 거룩을 향하게 한다. 그 마음에는 하나님이 주시는 기쁨과 평안이 자리 잡고, 어떤 상황 속에서도 흔들리지 않는 중심이 된다.
이처럼 재림을 고대하는 사람들은 교회 안에서 조용하지만 강한 불씨가 된다. 기도를 쉬지 않고, 헌신과 봉사를 기쁨으로 감당하며, 모든 일을 하나님의 영광이라는 기준으로 바라본다(고전 10:31). 이는 사도 바울이 보여준 삶의 모습과도 맞닿아 있다. 살아도 죽어도 그리스도가 존귀하게 되는 삶, 그것이 고대함을 품은 신자의 삶이다.
오늘 우리가 살아가는 시대 역시 결코 평온하지 않다. 세상의 여러 징조들은 오히려 우리로 하여금 더욱 깨어 있도록 만든다. 그리스도인은 두려움에 사로잡히기보다, 기도와 전도에 힘쓰며 준비하는 사람이다. 죽음조차 끝이 아니라 더 나은 시작으로 받아들이는 믿음은, 재림 신앙이 주는 독특한 담대함이다.
안타깝게도 많은 신자들이 이 고대함을 잃어버린 채 염려와 걱정 속에 살아간다. 그러나 여전히 재림을 간절히 기다리는 이들이 존재하기에 교회는 소망을 잃지 않는다. 결국 신앙의 본질은 ‘어디를 바라보며 사는가’에 달려 있다. 첫사랑을 회복한다는 것은 다시금 주님을 향한 이 고대함을 회복하는 일이다. 오늘을 살아가면서도 내일의 영원을 바라보는 삶, 그리스도의 재림을 기다리는 삶이야말로 그리스도인다운 삶일 것이다.
The Earnest Longing of Christians
For Christians who have been born again through the Holy Spirit, there is a deep and earnest longing. It is not merely waiting for time to pass, but a heartfelt yearning that rises from the depths of the soul. The object of this longing is clear: the return of Jesus Christ.
This anticipation is not a vague hope but a confident expectation rooted in the certainty of the complete transformation that awaits us. We look forward not to bodies that grow weak, age, and eventually perish, but to the day when we will be transformed into perfect, spiritual bodies.
This hope is not merely personal. Scripture teaches that all creation is also eagerly awaiting this day of restoration (Romans 8:19-23). The created world itself longs to be set free from its present limitations and suffering and to enter into glorious freedom (Romans 8:21). Therefore, faith in Christ’s return is not simply a source of comfort for individuals; it is a grand hope that looks toward the completion of God’s redemption for all creation.
A person who has been born again by the Holy Spirit is described in Greek as anthropos (ἄνθρωπος), which can be understood as “one who looks upward.” A Christian is, by nature, someone whose gaze is directed above—a person who lives with hope. Though we walk upon this earth, the direction of our lives is always oriented toward the Kingdom of God.
Such hope transforms the way we live. A person who recognizes that today could be his or her last day cannot remain consumed by greed or pride. The desire to stand before God blameless and without reproach leads to self-discipline and, ultimately, to holiness. Within that heart dwells the joy and peace that God gives, becoming a steady anchor that remains unshaken regardless of circumstances.
In this way, those who eagerly await Christ’s return become a quiet yet powerful flame within the church. They do not cease praying. They embrace service and sacrifice with joy. They evaluate all things according to one standard—the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). This reflects the life of the Apostle Paul, who desired that Christ would be honored whether by his life or by his death. Such is the life of a believer who lives with this earnest expectation.
The age in which we live is far from peaceful. The signs of the times should not drive us to fear but awaken us to greater vigilance. Christians are not people dominated by anxiety; they are people who prepare through prayer and evangelism. Even death is not viewed as the end but as the beginning of something far better. This is the unique courage that faith in Christ’s return provides.
Sadly, many believers have lost this eager expectation and live burdened by worries and concerns. Yet as long as there are those who still earnestly await the Lord’s return, the church will never lose hope. Ultimately, the essence of faith depends on where we fix our gaze. To recover our first love is to recover this longing for the Lord. Living today while looking toward eternity tomorrow—living in anticipation of Christ’s return—is truly the life that befits a Christian.
