서울대학교 법정대학원에는 로스쿨(Law School) 파트가 있다. 이곳에는 독실한 그리스도인 교수 서너 명과 40여 명의 학생들이 있다. 그들은 매 학기 초 개강예배를 드리며 신앙 안에서 출발을 다짐한다. 나는 2년 동안 설교자로 내정되어 하나님의 말씀을 전하였다. 예배로 시작하는 학기는 늘 경건하고 은혜로웠다.

어느 날 학생 대표가 내게 말했다. “지금은 서로 사랑하는 형제자매이지만, 시험장에서 마주치면 ‘저 친구가 떨어져야 내가 붙을 텐데’라는 생각이 들까 봐 두렵다.” 믿음의 공동체 안에서도 경쟁의 유혹은 남아 있다.

세상은 상대평가로 우수한 사람을 선발한다. 질서를 위해 필요한 제도이지만, 하나님의 나라는 다르다. 교회는 절대평가로 움직인다. 예수께서 말씀하신 달란트 비유를 보라. 주인은 종의 재능에 따라 다섯, 둘, 한 달란트를 나눠 주고, 결산할 때 다섯과 둘을 남긴 종 모두에게 똑같이 칭찬하였다(마 25:21, 23).

한 달란트를 받은 종도 열심히 하나를 남겼다면 똑같은 칭찬을 받았을 것이다. 분모가 5이고 분자가 5이면 약분해 1이 되듯, 하나님은 결과보다 충성의 비율을 보신다. 많이 받은 자는 많이, 적게 받은 자는 적게 내놓으면 된다. 기준은 정직과 진심이다.

예수께서는 누가복음 21장에서 두 렙돈을 드린 과부가 가장 많이 드렸다고 하셨다. 두 렙돈은 오늘날 약 2,500원이지만, 그녀는 생활비 전부를 하나님께 드렸다. 하나님은 액수보다 중심을 보신다. 사람의 눈과 하나님의 눈은 기준이 다르다.

천 명이 모이는 교회나 열 명이 모이는 교회나 크고 작음을 말할 수 없다. 헌금도 액수가 아니라 정성과 태도가 기준이다. 하나님은 마음을 귀히 여기신다.

절대평가를 하시는 하나님 앞에서 세상의 기준으로 남을 판단하거나 자신을 정죄해서는 안 된다. 하나님께서 맡기신 사명에 충성하며 살아갈 때 영적 평안과 기쁨이 따르게 된다. 그것이 믿는 자의 길이다.

선 줄로 생각하면 넘어질 수 있다. 물은 위에서 아래로 흐른다. 예수는 하나님의 본체이셨으나 자기를 비우고 아버지의 뜻에 따라 죽기까지 복종하셨다(빌 2:5~8). 우리도 그 마음을 품어야 한다.

삼위일체 하나님이 함께하시는 교회는 세상 평가에서 자유롭다. 서머나 교회는 가난했으나 영적으로 부요하여 주님의 칭찬을 받았다(계 2:8~11).

신전의식(神前意識) 속에 사는 자는 세상의 비교에서 해방된다. 세상이 몰라도 주님이 함께하신다는 확신 속에 그는 늘 기쁘고 평안하다. 이것이 절대평가 앞에 선 자의 삶이다.

Absolute Evaluation

At Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Law, there is a Law School division. Within it are three or four devout Christian professors and about forty students. At the beginning of every semester, they hold an opening worship service and commit themselves to starting the term grounded in faith. For two years, I was invited to serve as the preacher and to proclaim God’s Word. A semester that begins with worship is always marked by reverence and grace.

One day, a student representative said to me, “Right now we are brothers and sisters who love one another, but when we meet in the examination hall, I’m afraid I might think, ‘That person has to fail for me to pass.’” Even within a community of faith, the temptation of competition remains.

The world selects outstanding individuals through relative evaluation. It is a necessary system for maintaining order. But the kingdom of God is different. The church operates on absolute evaluation. Look at Jesus’ parable of the talents. The master gave five talents to one servant, two to another, and one to another, according to each one’s ability. When he settled accounts, he praised both the servant who earned five more and the servant who earned two more with the exact same words (Matthew 25:21, 23).

If the servant who received one talent had worked diligently and gained one more, he too would have received the same praise. Just as a fraction with five over five reduces to one, God looks not at the amount of the result but at the proportion of faithfulness. Those who receive much should offer much; those who receive little should offer little. The standard is sincerity and integrity.

In Luke 21, Jesus said that the widow who offered two small copper coins gave more than anyone else. Though the amount was minimal, equivalent to only a few dollars today—she gave all she had to live on. God looks not at the amount, but at the heart. Human standards and God’s standards are different.

A church with a thousand members is neither greater nor lesser than a church with ten members. Offerings are not measured by their size, but by devotion and attitude. God treasures the heart.

Before a God who judges by absolute evaluation, we must not judge others or condemn ourselves by worldly standards. When we live faithfully in the mission God has entrusted to us, spiritual peace and joy follow. This is the path of those who believe.

Those who think they are standing firm should be careful lest they fall. Water flows from high places to low. Though Jesus was in very nature God, He emptied Himself and obeyed the Father even to the point of death (Philippians 2:5–8). We too must have that same mind.

A church in which the Triune God dwells is free from the world’s evaluations. The church in Smyrna was materially poor, yet spiritually rich, and it received the Lord’s praise (Revelation 2:8–11).

Those who live with an awareness of standing before God are liberated from worldly comparison. Even if the world does not recognize them, they live with joy and peace in the assurance that the Lord is with them. This is the life of those who stand before God’s absolute evaluation.
