우리 그리스도인들이 하나님의 뜻을 이루고 온 영과 혼과 몸이 온전히 보전되는 방법이 있다. 그것은 항상 주 안에서 기뻐하며 쉬지 않고 기도하고 범사에 하나님께 감사하는 것이다(살전 5:16~23). 예수님을 구주로 믿는 자에게는 하나님의 허락 없이 이루어지는 일이 없다. 그러므로 모든 일에 하나님을 인정하는 자는 하나님의 인도를 받는다(잠 3:6).

다니엘을 보라. 그를 시기하여 죽이려는 자들이 삼십 일 동안 왕 외의 어떤 신이나 사람에게 구하면 사자굴에 던져 넣는 법을 만들었다(단 6:7). 다니엘은 전에 하던 대로 하루 세 번 무릎을 꿇고 감사하며 기도하였다(단 6:10). 결국 그는 사자굴에 던져졌으나 하나님께서 천사를 보내어 그를 지켜 주셨다. 다리오 왕은 다니엘을 모함한 자들을 벌하고 다니엘이 믿는 하나님의 이름을 높였다. 그리하여 다니엘은 참으로 형통하였다(단 6:24~28). 주와 복음을 위하여 고난당한 자는 사명이 있는 한 하나님의 이름을 널리 알리게 된다.

11월은 감사의 달이다. 셋째 주일은 한국교회가 추수감사주일로 지킨다. 온 마음과 정성을 다해 하나님께 감사의 제사를 드려야 한다. 그런 자에게 하나님께서 함께하시고 참된 복에 복을 더하신다(시 50:23). 추수감사절의 근거는 수장절에 있고(출 23:16), 오늘날 전 세계가 이를 지키는 것은 미국 전통 때문이다. 청교도들이 1621년 첫 수확을 감사로 드린 것이 시작이며, 워싱턴이 1789년에 국경일로 선포하고 1941년 매년 11월 넷째 목요일을 추수감사절로 정하였다.

비행기 사고는 바람이 강한 날 저공 비행 시에 주로 발생한다. 그러나 만오천 피트 이상의 고공 비행에서는 사고가 거의 없다. 신앙도 이와 같다. 영적으로 고공 비행해야 한다. 그것이 바로 범사에 하나님께 감사의 제사를 드리는 일이다. 육신적으로 좋은 일이 있을 때 감사하는 것은 누구나 할 수 있다. 그러나 자신을 해하려는 자들 앞에서도 하나님께 감사하는 자가 다니엘과 같은 영적 고공 비행자이다. 선한 일을 위하여 고난당하는 것이 하나님의 뜻이다(벧전 3:17). 하나님 나라에 들어가려면 많은 환난을 겪어야 함을 기억해야 한다(행 14:22).

우리는 최고의 영성을 갖고 살아야 한다. 최고의 믿음은 범사에 하나님께 감사하는 것이다. 환경의 변화를 기대하기보다 내 영성이 최고의 믿음을 지키는 것이 우선이다. 범사에 감사하는 믿음을 가진 자는 하나님의 마음과 생각을 품으니 그가 곧 하나님과 동행하는 자이다.

The Highest Faith is Gratitude

There is a way for us Christians to fulfill God’s will and for our spirit, soul, and body to be fully preserved. That way is to always rejoice in the Lord, pray without ceasing, and give thanks to God in everything (1 Thessalonians 5:16–23). For those who believe in Jesus as Savior, nothing happens without God’s permission. Therefore, anyone who acknowledges God in all their actions will receive His guidance (Proverbs 3:6).

Consider Daniel. Those who were jealous of him devised a law that anyone who prayed to any god or man other than the king for thirty days would be thrown into the lions’ den (Daniel 6:7). But Daniel continued as before—kneeling three times a day, giving thanks and praying (Daniel 6:10). In the end, he was thrown into the lions’ den, but God sent an angel to protect him. King Darius punished those who had plotted against Daniel and honored the name of the God whom Daniel trusted. Thus, Daniel prospered greatly (Daniel 6:24–28). Anyone who suffers for the Lord and the gospel, if they have a mission, will spread God’s name widely.

November is the month of thanksgiving. The third Sunday is observed by Korean churches as Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday. We should offer our thanksgiving to God with all our heart and devotion. To such people, God will be with them and add blessing upon blessing (Psalm 50:23). The basis for Thanksgiving comes from the Feast of Ingathering (Exodus 23:16), and today the worldwide observance is a result of American tradition. It began when the Puritans offered thanks for the first harvest in 1621, and later Washington proclaimed it a national holiday in 1789, officially establishing the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving in 1941.

Airplane accidents mostly occur when flying at low altitude on windy days. However, accidents are almost nonexistent at high altitudes above fifteen thousand feet. Faith is similar. We must soar spiritually at high altitudes. This is precisely what it means to offer thanksgiving to God in everything. Anyone can be thankful when good things happen in life, but those who give thanks to God even before those who seek to harm them are spiritual high-flyers like Daniel. Suffering for doing good is God’s will (1 Peter 3:17). We must remember that entering God’s kingdom requires enduring many trials (Acts 14:22).

We must live with the highest spirituality. The highest faith is to give thanks to God in everything. Rather than expecting circumstances to change, it is first and foremost that our spirit maintains the highest level of faith. Those who have a faith of gratitude in all things carry the heart and mind of God, and thus they walk with God.
