사람들이 어떤 일을 할 때에는 우선순위대로 한다. 옷을 입을 때나 밥을 지을 때나 집을 지을 때도 마찬가지이다. 아무리 급해도 실을 바늘 허리에 매고는 바느질을 할 수가 없다. 우리가 수학의 기초로 직삼각형의 넓이를 내는 공식에서 우선은 밑변과 높이를 곱한 후에 나누기 2는 나중에 해야 한다는 것을 배웠다.

신앙생활도 마찬가지이다. 사람은 영혼과 육체로 되어 있다. 영혼이 그 집의 주인이라면 집의 건물은 육체이다. 주인이 건강하고 부유하면 화려하고 멋있는 집은 금방 지을 수 있어도, 주인이 병들고 가난하면 화려하고 큰 집도 팔아야 한다. 그래서 사도 요한이 가이오에게 “네 영혼이 잘됨 같이 네가 범사에 잘되고 강건하기를 내가 간구하노라”(요삼 1:2)라고 한 것이다.

영혼이 건강하여 영이신 하나님과 하나가 되어 마음에 참 평안과 기쁨이 충만하여 마음에 천국이 이루어지는 일이 우선이다(마 12:18, 롬 14:17). 

이런 자들에게는 공통점들이 있다. 남을 비판하고 정죄하기 전에 먼저 자기 속에 있는 죄들부터 철저히 회개한다(마 7:1~5). 남에게 원망 들을 일이 생각나면 곧바로 그를 찾아가서 용서를 빌고 화평을 이룬다(마 5:23~24, 히 12:14). 이런 자들이 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하는 자들이다(마 6:33).

‘먼저’의 헬라어는 ‘프로톤’(πρῶτον)인데, 그 뜻은 ‘첫째로, 최우선으로’이다. ‘그의 나라’란 곧 하나님의 나라인데, 헬라어로 ‘바실레이아’(βασιλεία)이며 그 뜻은 하나님의 주권적인 통치를 의미한다.

하나님의 나라는 우리 그리스도인들이 아직 살아 있는 동안에 마음에 이루어지는 것인데, 어떠한 상황에서도 기쁨과 평안이 충만한 상태이다. 이런 자들은 그의 의를 먼저 구한다. 하나님께서 의롭다 하신 일에 온 마음과 정성과 힘을 다한다. 불의와 타협하지 않는다.

하나님께서는 이런 자들을 귀히 여기셔서 오른손으로 붙드시고 의의 병기로 들어 쓰신다(딤후 2:21). 우리 주 예수 그리스도는 하나님 아버지께서 원하시고 기뻐하시는 일을 위해 십자가를 지시면서 오늘날 우리에게 “너희는 나를 따라오라”고 하신다(벧전 2:21).

중요한 것은 우리가 먼저 새로워지는 일이다. 우리가 먼저 일어나서 빛을 발하자. 그때에 여호와의 영광의 빛이 우리 위에 임하실 것이다(사 60:1).

예수를 구주로 영접하기 전에는 어둠이던 자가 이제는 주 안에서 빛이 되었다. 그것의 위대한 확증이 착함과 의로움과 진실함으로 열매를 맺는 것이다(엡 5:8~9).

First things first

When people do something, they follow an order of priority. Whether getting dressed, cooking a meal, or building a house, there is a proper sequence. No matter how urgent it is, you cannot sew by tying the thread around the middle of the needle. In basic math, when calculating the area of a right triangle, we first multiply the base by the height and only then divide by two. Order matters.

The same is true in the life of faith. A person is made of soul and body. If the soul is the owner of the house, then the body is the building itself. If the owner is healthy and wealthy, a beautiful and impressive house can easily be built. But if the owner is sick and poor, even a large and splendid house may have to be sold. That is why the Apostle John prayed for Gaius, saying, “I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 1:2).

What must come first is that the soul be healthy—united with God, who is Spirit—so that true peace and joy fill the heart, and the kingdom of heaven is established within (Matthew 12:18; Romans 14:17).

Those who live this way share certain characteristics. Before criticizing or judging others, they thoroughly repent of the sins within themselves (Matthew 7:1–5). If they remember that someone has something against them, they go at once to seek forgiveness and pursue peace (Matthew 5:23–24; Hebrews 12:14). These are the ones who seek first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

The Greek word for “first” is prōton (πρῶτον), meaning “first of all” or “above all.” “His kingdom” refers to the kingdom of God—basileia (βασιλεία) in Greek—which means God’s sovereign rule.

The kingdom of God is something that is established in the hearts of believers while they are still living. It is a state in which joy and peace overflow regardless of circumstances. Such people seek His righteousness first. They devote all their heart, sincerity, and strength to what God declares righteous, and they do not compromise with unrighteousness.

God honors such people, holds them with His right hand, and uses them as instruments of righteousness (2 Timothy 2:21). Our Lord Jesus Christ bore the cross for what pleased and delighted God the Father, and He now calls us, “Follow Me” (1 Peter 2:21).

What matters most is that we ourselves are renewed first. Let us rise and shine. Then the glory of the Lord will rise upon us (Isaiah 60:1).

Before receiving Jesus as Savior, we were darkness; but now in the Lord we are light. The great evidence of this transformation is that we bear fruit in goodness, righteousness, and truth (Ephesians 5:8–9).
