안면수심(顔面獸心)이라는 말이 있다. 얼굴은 사람인데 마음은 짐승이라는 뜻이다. 짐승은 본능적으로 행동하는 동물이다. 영성(靈性)이나 이성(理性), 도덕성(道德性)이 없다.

이런 것들은 하나님의 형상으로 사람에게만 주셨다(창 1:26). 그런데 사람이 하나님의 말씀을 불순종하므로 하나님의 형상이 산산이 부서졌다. 참사람이신 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접하고 성령으로 거듭난 자들은 잃었던 하나님의 형상을 회복하게 된다.

그러나 예수를 믿지 않은 자들은 짐승처럼 본능적 욕구 충족만을 추구한다. 그래서 안면수심이 된 것이다. 그러므로 그들에게 예수님을 믿도록 전도해야 한다. 사실 짐승이 우리 사람보다 뛰어난 것이 많다.

개의 코는 가방 깊숙이 숨겨놓은 마약을 찾아내는 냄새 맡음이 사람보다 뛰어나다. 매나 독수리의 눈은 사람 눈보다 더 밝다. 빠르기로 하자면 치타가 더 빠르고, 코끼리나 소가 힘이 더 세다.

짐승이 본능으로 아는 것이 대단하다. 나는 몇 년 전에 아프리카에 선교를 갔다가 탄자니아에 있는 세렝게티에서 놀라운 일을 보았다. 건기(乾期)가 시작되는 그곳을 떠나 우기(雨期)가 시작되는 마사이 마라(5천 km의 케냐)를 향해 달려가는 수많은 누우 떼를 본 것이다. 짐승에게만 있는 본능이었다. 비가 내리는 그곳에 가서 자라나는 풀을 뜯고 물을 마시면서 새끼들을 낳아 기른 후에 다시 돌아온다는 현지인의 말을 들은 것이다.

그래서 예수를 믿지 않음으로 하나님의 형상을 회복하지 않으면 짐승만도 못한 사람이 될 수 있다. 그래서 우리 그리스도인들은 불신자들에게 전도해야 한다. 그리하여 그들도 우리와 같이 삼위일체 하나님과 하나가 되게 해야 한다(요 14:20).

하나님의 뜻은 모든 사람이 예수를 믿고 구원을 받으며 진리를 아는 데 이르기를 바라심이다(딤전 2:4). 예수를 믿으면 짐승에게는 없는 영성과 도덕성을 지니게 된다. 우리가 전도할 때에 부활하시므로 사망 권세를 이기시고 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 가지신 그리스도께서 세상 끝날까지 항상 함께하신다(마 28:18~20).

열매로 나무를 안다. 전도하는 자가 하나님의 뜻대로 행한 자이다. 우리들도 예수 믿기 전에는 짐승보다 못한 자들이 아니었던가. 그러나 이제는 짐승에게는 없는 하나님의 형상을 회복했으니 하나님의 눈으로 세상을 보자.

A Person More Beastly Than Animals

There is a saying, “Anmyeonsusim (顔面獸心),” which literally means “a human face but a beastly heart.” It describes someone whose face is human, but whose heart is like an animal. Beasts act on instinct; they have no spirituality, no reason, no moral sense.

These qualities—spirituality, reason, morality—were given only to humans in God’s image (Genesis 1:26). But when humans disobey God’s Word, His image is shattered. Those who accept Jesus Christ, the true Human, as Savior and are born again by the Holy Spirit restore the lost image of God.

However, those who do not believe in Jesus pursue only their instinctive desires, acting like beasts. That is why they are “Anmyeonsusim.” In fact, some abilities of animals surpass humans:

• A dog’s nose can detect drugs hidden deep in a bag better than humans.
• A hawk or eagle’s eyes are sharper than ours.
• A cheetah is faster, and an elephant or ox is stronger.

Animals excel at knowing and acting by instinct. Years ago, I went on a mission trip to Africa and witnessed an amazing sight in the Serengeti of Tanzania. At the start of the dry season, huge herds of wildebeest began migrating toward Maasai Mara in Kenya, 5,000 km away. It was purely instinct. Locals told me they arrive where the rains fall, graze and drink, give birth to their young, and then return.

If humans do not believe in Jesus and restore God’s image, they may become worse than beasts. That is why we Christians must evangelize the unbelievers, so they too may be united with the Triune God (John 14:20).

God’s will is for all people to believe in Jesus, be saved, and come to the knowledge of truth (1 Timothy 2:4). Believing in Jesus gives humans spirituality and moral sense that animals do not have. When we evangelize, we do so with the assurance that the risen Christ, who conquered death and has all authority in heaven and on earth, is with us until the end of the age (Matthew 28:18–20).

You know a tree by its fruit. Evangelists are those who act according to God’s will. Before we believed in Jesus, were we not also worse than beasts in some ways? But now, having restored the image of God that animals do not possess, let us see the world through God’s eyes.
