성탄절에 해야 할 일들
성탄절은 전 우주적인 사건이다. 하나님의 본체이신 분이 사람의 몸을 입고 이 세상에 탄생하셨기에 역사의 주인이시다. 그러기에 주 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 기준으로 BC(Before Christ)와 AD(Anno Domini)가 나뉜다.
예수 그리스도께서 탄생하실 때에 “온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식”을 천사가 전했고, “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요, 땅에서는 평화로다”며 수많은 천군이 함께 찬송을 불렀다. 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 찾아온 박사들은 미리 준비한 예물들을 아기 예수님께 드렸다.
오늘날 성탄절에는 이런 일들을 우리 그리스도인들이 해야 한다. 주님께 성탄 감사 헌금을 정성껏 준비해 드려야 하고, 유일한 구원자 예수 그리스도의 복음을 불신자들에게 전해야 한다.
내가 경험한 성탄절 새벽 체험을 말씀드리겠다. 1968년 6월 군 제대 후, 우리 마을에 새로 교회가 생겼다. 3km 떨어진 마을까지 다니던 세 가족 교인들이 모였다. 그해 성탄절 전까지 중·고등학생 10여 명을 전도했고, 그 아이들과 함께 새벽 송을 돌았다. 윗마을, 중간 마을, 아랫마을 80여 호를 방문하며 불신자 집에서는 ‘고요한 밤 거룩한 밤’을, 믿는 집에서는 ‘기쁘다 구주 오셨네’를 한 절씩 불렀다.
어느 불신자 집에 갔더니 대굿을 하는 중이었다. 귀신 들린 무당 두 명이 제를 치고 춤을 추며 굿을 하고 있었다. 그 집에서 ‘기쁘다 구주 오셨네’를 힘차게 부르자, 요란하던 징 소리가 약해지더니 멈췄다. 집 주인 아주머니가 겁에 질려 달려와 “찬송 소리에 무당 두 명이 힘을 잃고 쓰러졌다”고 했다.
그 순간 “찬송 중에 계시는 주”(시 22:3)가 떠올랐다. 하나님께서 전도 기회를 주신 줄 알고, “귀신도 신이지만 하나님만 참신이시니 찬송만 불러도 쓰러지는 약한 신을 믿지 말고, 참 하나님께서 보내신 주 예수를 믿으라”고 전했다. 그리하여 그 집 식구 다섯 명이 모두 예수를 믿고 교회에 나오게 되었다.
이번 성탄절에 우리가 할 일은 불신자 전도다. 나와 관계 있는 불신자들에게 복음을 전해야 한다. 죽음을 이기고 부활하신 예수님은 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 가지셨고, 세상 끝날까지 전도하는 자들과 함께하시겠다고 약속하셨다.
교회는 여성 명사다. 결혼한 여자가 할 일은 아이 낳기와 양육이다. 곧 불신자를 전도하고, 낳은 영적 자녀를 일군으로 키워내는 것이다. 이번 성탄절에 이 두 가지 일을 하자. 그리하여 지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이 되고, 땅에서는 기뻐하는 자들 중에 평화가 있게 하자.
Things to Do at Christmas
Christmas is a cosmic event. Because God Himself took on human flesh and was born into this world, He is the Lord of history. That is why the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ marks the division between BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini).
When Jesus Christ was born, the angels proclaimed “good news of great joy that will be for all the people,” and countless heavenly hosts sang together, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased.” The wise men from the East, having seen His star, came to worship Him and brought gifts they had prepared in advance to the baby Jesus.
Today, as Christians, we are called to do similar things at Christmas. We should prepare our Christmas offerings to the Lord with devotion, and we must share the gospel of Jesus Christ, the one and only Savior, with unbelievers.
I would like to share my own early-morning Christmas experience. After being discharged from military service in June 1968, a new church was established in my village. Three families who had been traveling 3 km to another village to attend church came together.
By Christmas of that year, we had evangelized about ten middle- and high-school students, and together with them, we went on early-morning caroling rounds. We visited some 80 households in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the village. At the homes of unbelievers, we sang one verse of “Silent Night, Holy Night”, and at believing homes, one verse of “Joy to the World”.
At one unbeliever’s house, a shaman ritual was in progress. Two shamans, possessed by spirits, were performing a ceremony and dancing. When we boldly sang “Joy to the World” in that house, the noisy sound of drums gradually weakened and then stopped. The housewife ran out, terrified, and said, “The two shamans lost their strength and collapsed at the sound of your hymn.”
At that moment, I thought of “the Lord is present in the praise” (Psalm 22:3). Recognizing that God had given us an opportunity to evangelize, I preached, “Though spirits may exist, only God is the true God. Do not trust weak spirits that fall simply at the sound of praise; believe in the Lord Jesus sent by the true God.”
As a result, all five members of that household came to believe in Jesus and began attending church.
What we should do this Christmas is evangelize to unbelievers. We must share the gospel with those around us who do not yet believe. Jesus, who overcame death and rose again, possesses all authority in heaven and on earth, and He promised to be with those who evangelize until the end of the age.
The church is feminine in nature. The role of a married woman is to give birth and raise children. Similarly, our task is to evangelize unbelievers and nurture the spiritual children we bring to faith into mature disciples.
This Christmas, let us focus on these two tasks. In doing so, may there be glory to God in the highest and peace on earth among those who rejoice.
