우리가 믿는 하나님은 계시(啓示, Revelation)로만 알 수 있다 (엡 1:17~18). 하나님은 계시를 통해 자신의 성품과 뜻과 계획 등을 알게 하신다. 그러므로 사람의 이성과 지성만으로는 이해하기 어렵다. 그런데 하나님이 어떤 분이신가를 계시하시는 방법에는 세 가지가 있다.

첫 번째는 직접계시니, 곧 성경이다.

그러므로 성경을 읽어야 하고 들어야 하고 배워야 하고 주야로 묵상하면서 실천해야 한다 (계 1:3, 딤후 3:16~17). 예수님 당시 유대교인들은 성경을 많이 알고는 있었으나 행하지는 않음으로 말미암아 주님께서는 그들에게 화(禍)가 임하게 될 것을 책망하시고 제자들에게는 “…그들이 말하는 바는 행하고 지키되 그들이 하는 행위는 본받지 말라…”(마 23:3)고 하신 것이다. 성경은 하나님의 직접계시이고, 간접계시는 두 가지가 있다. 살아계신 하나님을 간접적으로 보여주는 계시다.

두 번째는 역사(歷史)이다.

성경에도 이미 지난 역사를 기록한 이유는 오늘을 살아가는 우리들에게 교훈을 주기 위함이다 (롬 15:4).

화려한 현대식 건물들로 가득한 베를린 시내에 흉물이 하나 있다. 새까맣게 불에 그을리고 두 동강이로 갈라져 있는 예배당이다. 세계대전 시에 영국의 폭격기가 잘못 투하한 폭탄에 의해 파괴된 건물이다. 이 예배당 이름이 ‘카이저 빌헬름 기념교회’이다.

전쟁이 끝난 후에 영국이 독일에게 사과하며 새 예배당 건축비를 보내주겠다고 했으나 독일이 거부하였다. 이유는 후대에 교육 자료로 쓰겠다고 한 것이다.

세 번째의 계시는 대자연이다.

물론 이것도 하나님의 간접계시다. 최근에 지구의 허파로 혹은 산소통으로 불리던 남미의 아마존강 유역의 울창한 숲이 사라져 가고 있다. 농경사회에서 산업화 운동으로 바뀌면서 매일 골프장 서른세 개 정도의 숲이 사라져 가고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 과학의 발달로 말미암아 공장들이 뿜어내는 연기와 오염물질이 대기와 대지와 수질 등을 심각하게 오염시키고 있다.

그 결과로 사람들이 이름도 모르는 희귀병에 걸리는가 하면, 엘니뇨(El Niño) 현상으로 섬들이 바다에 잠기는 일들이 일어나고 있다.

그러므로 위로 하나님을 사랑하는 자는 하나님이 창조하신 피조물들을 귀히 여기고 보존해야 한다. 사람들이 필요해서 만든 물건들도 그 기능들이 발휘될 때는 귀히 여기지만, 깨져서 크게 망가져서 더 이상 수리가 불가능한 지경이 되면 버린다.

하나님도 마찬가지다. 우리 모두 하나님의 계시들 중에서 직접계시인 성경에 몰입하고, 간접계시도 주의 깊이 여기자.

The God we believe in can be known only through revelation (Ephesians 1:17–18). Through revelation, God makes known His character, His will, and His plans. Therefore, God cannot be fully understood by human reason and intellect alone. There are three ways by which God reveals who He is.

The first is direct revelation, namely, the Holy Scriptures.

Therefore, we must read the Bible, listen to it, study it, meditate on it day and night, and put it into practice (Revelation 1:3; 2 Timothy 3:16–17). At the time of Jesus, the Jews knew the Scriptures well, but they did not practice what they knew. For this reason, the Lord rebuked them, warning that judgment would come upon them, and said to His disciples, “…So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do…” (Matthew 23:3). The Bible is God’s direct revelation. There are also two forms of indirect revelation, through which the living God is shown to us indirectly.

The second is history.

The reason the Bible records past history is to teach us who are living today (Romans 15:4).

In the city of Berlin, filled with modern and magnificent buildings, there stands one haunting ruin. It is a church building, blackened by fire and split in two. It was destroyed by a bomb mistakenly dropped by a British bomber during World War II. The name of this church is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. After the war, Britain offered to apologize and provide funds to rebuild the church, but Germany declined. The reason was that they wanted to preserve it as an educational resource for future generations.

The third revelation is nature.

This too is God’s indirect revelation. Recently, the dense forests of the Amazon River basin in South America—often called the “lungs of the earth” or its oxygen tank—have been rapidly disappearing. As societies shift from agriculture to industrialization, forests equivalent to about thirty-three golf courses are being destroyed every day. In addition, the development of science and industry has caused factories to release smoke and pollutants that severely contaminate the air, the land, and water systems. As a result, people are afflicted with rare diseases whose names are barely known, and phenomena such as El Niño are causing islands to be submerged under rising seas.



Therefore, those who love God must cherish and preserve the created world that God has made. Even objects created by human beings are valued while they function properly, but once they are broken beyond repair, they are discarded.

God is no different. Let all of us immerse ourselves in God’s revelations, especially the direct revelation of Scripture, and also pay careful attention to His indirect revelations.
