하나님의 선민 이스라엘 민족이 하나님의 은혜로 애굽의 노예 생활에서 해방되어서 꿈에도 그리던 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 가나안을 향해 가는데 진퇴양난에 빠지게 된다. 앞에는 홍해요, 뒤에는 애굽에서 나간 이스라엘을 잡아서 애굽으로 끌고 가기 위해 나온 애굽 군대다. 어느 날 이와 같은 일들이 각 교회와 그리스도인들 개인에게 가끔씩 나타난다.

어떻게 해야 할까? 성경이 답이다. 과거의 역사들은 오늘을 살아가는 자들의 거울이요 교훈이다 (롬 15:4). 여호와를 경외하는 지혜자들은 항상 위기를 기회가 되게 한다. 앞서간 믿음의 사람들처럼 하기 때문이다. 지혜자 모세는 문제가 발생하자 문제보다 더 크신 하나님께 (요한일서 4:4) 무릎을 꿇어 기도하였고, 하나님께서 시키는 대로 손에 든 지팡이를 홍해 위로 내밀었다. 그때 여호와께서 강한 동풍을 불게 하사 바다 가운데로 길을 내셨다. 그 길은 선민에게는 구원의 길이 되게 하셨다. 그러나 애굽 군대는 심판의 바다가 되게 하셨다.

기도와 순종은 오직 믿음으로 우리가 할 일이다. 그러면 기적은 하나님께서 행하신다. 이것이 바로 하나님께서 함께하시는 교회다. 다만 하나님의 능력이 나타나지 못하게 하는 걸림돌이 있다. 하나님과 원수가 되게 하는 육신의 생각이다 (롬 8:5). 그러므로 생명과 평안을 얻게 하는 영(하나님)의 생각(롬 8:6~7)을 따르기 위해서는 자기(육신)의 생각을 십자가에 못 박아야 한다 (마 16:24).

아람 나라 국방장관 나아만을 보라. 선지자 엘리사가 그의 종을 통해 문둥병을 고침 받기 위해 요단강에 가서 몸을 일곱 번 씻으라 하자 그는 노를 발하며 자기 육신의 생각을 주장한다 (왕하 5:9~12). 그는 돌이켜서 어린아이가 된 것이다. 수행 뭔들의 간청을 듣고(왕하 5:13) 주의 종이 시킨 대로 요단강 물속에 들어가서 몸을 일곱 번 씻으니 나병이 사라지고 어린아이사처럼 되었다(왕하 5:14).

각자의 마음과 생각이 자기의 운명을 결정하게 한다. 그는 새사람이 되었다. 흔들리지 않고 피는 꽃이 없고 넘어져 보지 않고 걷는 아이가 없듯이 우리들도 수없이 넘어진 자다. 끝까지 참고 기다려 주시는 하나님의 사랑의 결과다. 삶에서 위기를 만날 때에 두려워하지 말고 문제보다 더 크신 하나님께 엎드려 도움을 구하는 기도의 사람이 되자. 그리고 믿음의 사람 다윗처럼 하나님 편에서 문제를 보자 (삼상 17장). 그러면 하나님께서 우리가 당하는 위기를 문제 해결 받고 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하는 기회가 되게 할 것이다.

In Times of Crisis

By God’s grace, the chosen people of Israel were freed from slavery in Egypt and set out toward the long-awaited land flowing with milk and honey—Canaan. Yet along the way, they found themselves trapped in an impossible situation. In front of them was the Red Sea; behind them was the Egyptian army, sent to capture them and drag them back to Egypt. Situations like this still arise at times in individual lives and in churches today.

What should we do? The Bible gives us the answer. The events of the past are a mirror and a lesson for those who live today (Romans 15:4). Those who fear the Lord and walk in wisdom always turn crises into opportunities, because they follow the example of the faithful who went before them.

When the crisis arose, the wise leader Moses did not focus on the problem but knelt before God, who is greater than any problem (1 John 4:4). In obedience, he stretched out the staff in his hand over the Red Sea, just as God commanded. Then the Lord caused a strong east wind to blow, opening a path through the sea. That path became a way of salvation for God’s people, but for the Egyptian army it became a sea of judgment.

Prayer and obedience are what we, by faith, are called to do. The miracle itself is God’s work. This is what it means to be a church with which God is present. However, there is something that hinders the manifestation of God’s power: the mindset of the flesh, which makes us enemies of God (Romans 8:5). Therefore, in order to follow the mind of the Spirit which brings life and peace (Romans 8:6–7), we must crucify our own fleshly thoughts (Matthew 16:24).

Consider Naaman, the commander of the army of Aram. When the prophet Elisha, through his servant, told him to wash seven times in the Jordan River to be healed of leprosy, Naaman became angry and insisted on his own way of thinking (2 Kings 5:9–12). Yet when he humbled himself, listened to the plea of his servants (2 Kings 5:13), and did exactly as the man of God instructed, he washed seven times in the Jordan. His leprosy disappeared, and his flesh became like that of a little child (2 Kings 5:14).

Each person’s heart and thoughts determine his or her destiny. Naaman became a new man. Just as no flower blooms without being shaken by the wind, and no child learns to walk without falling, we too have fallen many times. It is the result of God’s patient and enduring love that waits for us to the end.

When we encounter crises in life, let us not be afraid. Instead, let us fall before God in prayer and seek help from the One who is greater than every problem. And like David, a person of faith, let us stand on God’s side and view the problem from His perspective (1 Samuel 17). Then God will turn the crises we face into opportunities—opportunities to experience His deliverance and to give Him glory.
