교인 한 분이 나를 찾아와 간절히 부탁했다. 초등학교를 막 졸업한 친척 여자아이가 있는데, 부모 없이 혼자 자라 어렵게 살아온 아이라, 밥만 먹여주는 가정부로 써 달라는 말이었다. 그 아이의 이름은 금순이었다.
그 당시 나는 어느 사장네 집에서 방 두 칸을 전세로 얻어 살고 있었다. 금순이가 우리 집에 온 지 사흘째 되던 날, 일이 벌어졌다. 사장은 출근하고, 그의 아내는 동창 모임에 참석했으며, 자녀들은 학교에 등교한 상태였다. 우리 부부는 교인 심방을 위해 외출했다.
오후 늦게 집에 돌아왔을 때 깜짝 놀랐다. 마당의 잘 가꿔진 30평 잔디가 흔적도 없이 사라져 있었기 때문이다. 알고 보니 금순이가 오전 내내 잔디를 모두 뽑아 쓰레기통에 버린 것이었다. 이유를 묻자 금순이는 “서울 사람들은 너무 바빠서 마당의 풀도 못 뽑는 것 같아 제가 다 뽑아드렸어요”라고 말했다.
금순이는 농촌에서 자랐다. 시골에서는 마당에 난 풀을 뽑는 것이 당연하다. 마당은 곡식이나 농작물을 널어 말리는 공간이기 때문이다. 금순이에게는 분명 선한 행동이었고, 시골의 상식이자 미덕이었다.
하지만 도시의 관점에서는 큰 실수였다. 나는 금순이를 나무라지 않았다. 오히려 미리 가르치지 않은 내 책임이 더 크다고 여겼다. 집주인에게는 내가 대신 사과했고, 전문가를 불러 다시 잔디를 심었다. 그 일은 나에게 깊은 교훈이 되었다. ‘자기 생각대로 한 선행’과 ‘하나님 보시기에 참된 선’은 반드시 같지 않다는 것이다.
오늘날도 많은 이들이 금순이처럼 자기 소견에 옳은 대로 행한다(삿 17:6). 그러나 성경은 죄를 ‘하마르티아(ἁμαρτία)’라 하는데, 이는 ‘표적에서 벗어남’을 뜻한다. 우리의 말과 행동, 생각은 예수 그리스도와 같아야 하며, 곧 성경적이어야 한다(딤후 3:16~17).
이 사건 이후 나는 어떤 직분자를 세울 때에도 반드시 교육과 훈련이 선행되어야 한다는 확신을 갖게 되었다. 교육은 모르는 것을 깨우쳐 주는 것이고, 훈련은 아는 것을 반복해 삶 속에 새기게 만드는 과정이다.
“하나님을 사랑하는 자, 곧 그 뜻대로 부르심을 받은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라”(롬 8:28).
Geumsun, Who Pulled Out the Lawn
One day, a church member came to me with an earnest request. There was a young girl, a relative who had just graduated from elementary school. She had grown up alone without her parents and lived a very difficult life. The request was that we take her in as a house helper, simply providing her with meals. Her name was Geumsun.
At that time, my wife and I were living in two rented rooms in the home of a company president. On the third day after Geumsun came to live with us, an incident occurred. The owner had gone to work, his wife was attending a reunion, and their children were at school. My wife and I had gone out to visit church members.
When we returned home late in the afternoon, we were shocked. The neatly maintained lawn—about one hundred square meters—had completely disappeared. Not a blade of grass was left. We soon learned that Geumsun had spent the entire morning pulling out all the grass and throwing it into the trash. When we asked her why, she answered innocently,
“People in Seoul seem so busy that they don’t even have time to pull the weeds in their yard, so I pulled them all out for you.”
Geumsun had grown up in the countryside. In rural areas, pulling weeds from the yard is natural and expected. The yard is a place where crops or harvested grain are laid out to dry. To Geumsun, what she did was clearly a good deed—common sense and even a virtue in the countryside.
However, from an urban perspective, it was a serious mistake. I did not scold Geumsun. Instead, I realized that the greater fault was mine for not teaching her beforehand. I apologized to the homeowner on her behalf and hired professionals to replant the lawn. That incident left me with a deep lesson: a good deed done according to one’s own thinking is not always the same as what is truly good in God’s eyes.
Even today, many people act as Geumsun did—doing what seems right in their own eyes (Judges 17:6). The Bible calls sin hamartia (ἁμαρτία), which means “missing the mark.” Our words, actions, and thoughts must align with Jesus Christ; they must be biblical (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
After this incident, I became firmly convinced that education and training must always come before appointing anyone to a position of responsibility. Education teaches what we do not know, and training engrains what we know through repetition until it becomes part of life.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
