우리가 믿는 유일하신 구원자 예수 그리스도는 자신을 믿는 자들에게 은혜 위에 은혜를 넘치도록 베푸신다. 그분은 은혜와 진리가 충만하신 분이시기 때문이다(요 1:14). 그러므로 우리는 날마다 주님께 더 큰 은혜를 구하며 새롭게 변화되어야 한다(요 1:16).
신학자들은 구원의 과정을 세 단계로 설명한다. 첫째는 칭의(稱義, Justification)이다. 이는 예수 그리스도를 믿는 자를 하나님께서 의롭다 하시는 선언으로, 단번에 이루어진다. 둘째는 성화(聖化, Sanctification)이다. 이는 신자가 점차 예수님을 닮아가며 거룩함에 이르는 과정으로, 계속적인 성장이 요구된다. 우리는 유혹에 흔들리는 미숙한 신앙에서 벗어나, 그리스도의 장성한 분량까지 자라야 한다(엡 4:13~14). 셋째는 영화(榮化, Glorification)이다. 이는 성도가 세상을 떠난 후 천국에서 이루어지는 구원의 완성 단계로, 그날 믿는 자들의 얼굴은 해처럼 빛날 것이다(마 13:43).
예수님의 십자가 대속은 죄와 사망의 법에서 우리를 해방하셨다. 이것이 복음의 중심이다. 그러므로 우리는 더 이상 죄의 종이 되어선 안 된다. 죄(罪)는 네 가지 성질을 갖고 있다. 첫째, 고착성(固着性)은 죄를 죄로 인식하지 못하는 상태다. 둘째, 성장성(成長性)은 욕심이 잉태하여 죄를 낳고, 죄가 자라 사망에 이르게 한다(약 1:15). 셋째, 전염성(傳染性)은 죄가 타인에게 전해지는 성격이다. 하와가 선악과를 먹고 아담에게도 먹게 한 것이 그 예다. 넷째, 파멸성(破滅性)은 죄의 끝이 영원한 지옥 형벌임을 뜻한다. 하지만 하나님은 이런 죄인들을 사랑하셔서 독생자 예수 그리스도께 우리 죄를 대신 짊어지게 하셨다(사 53:6).
그러므로 우리는 은혜 위에 또 은혜를 받아 우리를 통한 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지도록 해야 한다. 우리가 전에는 어두움이었더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이 되었다(엡 5:8).
빛이 된 자는 삶의 방향, 기치, 방법, 목적이 분명하다. 살든지 죽든지 내 몸에서 그리스도가 존귀하게 되는 것이다(빌 1:20~21).
우리는 지금 현재 진행형의 삶을 살고 있다(빌 3:12~14). 하나님은 준비된 자를 들어 쓰신다. 자신의 양심을 깨끗이 하자(딤후 2:20~21). 선 줄로 생각하면 넘어진다(고전 10:12).
하나님이 시키시는 훈련을 잘 감수하여 마침내 풍성한 것을 얻는 자가 되자(시 66:10~12). 이러한 자들이 은혜 위에 은혜를 받는 자들이다.
Grace upon Grace
Jesus Christ, the one and only Savior in whom we believe, pours out grace upon grace on those who believe in Him. This is because He is full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Therefore, we must seek greater grace from the Lord each day and be continually renewed and transformed (John 1:16).
Theologians explain the process of salvation in three stages.
First is justification. This is God’s declaration that those who believe in Jesus Christ are righteous. It happens once and for all. Second is sanctification. This is the ongoing process by which believers gradually become more like Jesus and grow in holiness. It requires continual growth. We must move beyond immature faith that wavers under temptation and grow to the full measure of the stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:13–14). Third is glorification. This is the final stage of salvation, completed in heaven after believers leave this world. On that day, the faces of the righteous will shine like the sun (Matthew 13:43).
The redemptive work of Jesus on the cross has set us free from the law of sin and death. This is the heart of the gospel. Therefore, we must no longer live as slaves to sin. Sin has four characteristics.
First, fixation—a state in which one no longer recognizes sin as sin.
Second, growth—desire conceives sin, and sin, when fully grown, brings forth death (James 1:15).
Third, contagion—sin spreads to others, as when Eve ate the forbidden fruit and gave it to Adam.
Fourth, destruction—the end of sin is eternal judgment in hell. Yet God loved sinners so much that He laid all our sins upon His only Son, Jesus Christ (Isaiah 53:6).
Therefore, we must receive grace upon grace so that God’s will may be fulfilled through us. Once we were darkness, but now we are light in the Lord (Ephesians 5:8).
Those who have become light have a clear direction, banner, method, and purpose in life: whether living or dying, that Christ may be honored in their bodies (Philippians 1:20–21).
We are living a life that is still in progress (Philippians 3:12–14). God uses those who are prepared. Let us cleanse our consciences (2 Timothy 2:20–21). Whoever thinks they are standing firm should be careful not to fall (1 Corinthians 10:12).
Let us faithfully endure the training God gives, so that in the end we may receive abundance (Psalm 66:10–12). Such people are those who receive grace upon grace.
