“~때문에”는 어떤 일의 원인이나 이유를 설명하는 표현이다. 나사로는 병들어 죽었으나 예수님의 능력으로 다시 살아났다. 당시 유대인들은 예수님을 반대하고 있었고, 나사로의 부활을 보고 많은 유대인들이 예수님을 믿게 되었다. 이로 인해 유대 지도자들은 예수님을 죽이기로 결심하게 된 것이다(요 12:10).

나사로는 마르다와 마리아의 오빠로 예수님의 사랑을 받던 사람이었다. 그는 병들어 결국 죽었고, 예수님은 그 소식을 들으셨지만 바로 가시지 않으셨다. 나사로는 죽었고, 그의 가족들은 깊은 슬픔에 빠졌다. 예수님은 그들과 함께 우셨다. 진정한 사랑은 함께 우는 것이다. 그러나 예수님의 사랑은 거기서 멈추지 않았다. 죽은 나사로를 다시 살리시며 절망을 소망으로 바꾸셨다. 이 사건을 통해 하나님의 사랑은 감정적 동정에 그치지 않고, 실제로 우리를 변화시키고 구원으로 이끄는 능력임을 깨닫게 된다.

성경은 병의 영적 의미를 세 가지로 설명한다. 첫째, 병은 하나님께서 회개를 이끌기 위해 허락하시는 도구일 수 있다. 예수님은 고침 받은 자에게 “다시는 죄를 범하지 말라”고 하셨다(요 5:14). 둘째, 병은 우리의 믿음을 연단하는 수단이 될 수 있다. 사도 바울은 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다”(고후 12:9)라고 하셨다. 셋째, 어떤 병은 하나님의 영광을 나타내기 위한 것이다. 예수님은 나사로의 병에 대해 “하나님의 영광을 위함이라”고 하셨다(요 11:4).

나사로의 부활은 하나님의 뜻이 드러난 사건이었다. 이 사건이 성경에 기록된 이유는 오늘 우리에게 주는 교훈이 있기 때문이다(롬 15:4). 우리가 하나님을 믿고 따르는 이유는, 과거의 성경 이야기가 우리의 삶과 연결되기 때문이다. 우리가 본받아야 할 것은 예수님께서 보여주신 사랑과 능력, 그리고 그것을 통해 믿음을 새롭게 하고, 다른 사람에게 그 믿음을 전하는 것이다.

우리는 예전에는 영적으로 병들고 죽어 있었지만, 예수님의 은혜로 새 생명을 얻은 자들이다. 이제는 ‘나 때문에’ 누군가가 예수님을 믿게 되는 역사가 일어나야 한다. 그리스도인으로서 우리의 삶이 그리스도의 사랑을 세상에 전하는 통로가 되어야 한다. 나사로로 인해 예수님을 믿게 된 유대인들처럼, 우리의 삶을 통해 예수님에 대해 부정적이었던 사람들이 믿음을 갖게 되는 역사가 일어나야 한다. 우리는 단순히 믿음을 가진 사람이 아니라, 그 믿음을 세상에 전파하는 사명을 가진 사람들이다. 예수님의 능력을 통해 변화된 우리의 삶이 바로 그 사명의 시작이다.

Because of Lazarus



The expression “because of” explains the cause or reason for something. Lazarus became sick and died, but he was brought back to life by the power of Jesus. At that time, many Jews were opposing Jesus, but when they witnessed the resurrection of Lazarus, many of them came to believe in Him. As a result, the Jewish leaders decided to put Jesus to death (John 12:10).

Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary, and he was dearly loved by Jesus. He became ill and eventually died. Although Jesus heard the news, He did not go immediately. Lazarus died, and his family fell into deep sorrow. Jesus wept with them. True love is to weep together. But Jesus’ love did not stop there. By raising Lazarus from the dead, He turned despair into hope. Through this event, we come to realize that God’s love is not merely emotional sympathy, but a power that truly transforms us and leads us to salvation.

The Bible explains the spiritual meaning of illness in three ways.
First, illness can be a tool God allows to lead a person to repentance. Jesus said to the man He healed, “Sin no more” (John 5:14). Second, illness can be a means of refining our faith. The apostle Paul heard the Lord say, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Third, some illnesses exist to reveal the glory of God. Concerning Lazarus’ illness, Jesus said, “It is for the glory of God” (John 11:4).

The resurrection of Lazarus was an event that revealed God’s will. The reason this event is recorded in Scripture is because it carries a lesson for us today (Romans 15:4). We believe in and follow God because the stories of Scripture are connected to our own lives. What we must imitate is the love and power shown by Jesus—renewing our faith through them and passing that faith on to others.

We were once spiritually sick and dead, but through the grace of Jesus, we have received new life. Now, there must be moments when “because of me” someone comes to believe in Jesus. As Christians, our lives must become channels through which Christ’s love is conveyed to the world. Just as many Jews came to believe in Jesus because of Lazarus, there should be people who once held negative views about Jesus but come to faith through our lives. We are not merely people who possess faith; we are people entrusted with the mission of spreading that faith. Our transformed lives through the power of Jesus are the very beginning of that mission.
