어느 날 강남 금식기도원에서 정기 집회를 마치고 식사하던 중, 기도원 총무 목사님이 말을 건넸다.

“목사님, 지난주에는 목사님 교단인 백석신학대학교 교수님들이 이곳에 오셔서 일주일 동안 금식하며 기도하고 가셨습니다. 기도원 역사상 교수님들이 이렇게 오신 건 처음입니다.”

그 순간, 아들이 백석신학대학교 교수로 채용될 당시, 3일간 금식하며 기도했던 일이 떠올랐다. 백석대학원의 교수들은 매 학기 두 주간 영성훈련에 참여해 왔다. 이 모든 일은 백석 교단과 학원을 세운 장종현 목사님의 바른 신앙과 확고한 사명에서 비롯되었다.

장종현 목사님은 생명 신학을 외친다. ‘오직 예수, 새 생명’이다. 예수를 구주로 영접한 자들에게 주어진 풍성한 새 생명(요 10:10)은 주님께서 주신 마음의 기쁨과 평안이며, 살아계신 삼위일체 하나님과 함께하는 삶이야말로 신학의 본질이다. 생명 신학은 죽은 교리를 넘어 살아 있는 말씀, 곧 예수 그리스도와의 실제적 연합을 강조한다. 세상의 철학이 아닌, 변함없는 하나님의 말씀과 예수 그리스도를 따르려는 결단이 있었기에 가능한 일이다. 신학과 영성이 분리되지 않는 지도자 양성의 모범이 된다.

지금 이 시대를 보면, 예수님께서 종말에 관해 말씀하신 현상들이 눈앞에 펼쳐지고 있다. 이럴 때일수록 정신을 차리고, 근신하며 깨어 기도해야 한다. 사도행전의 성령의 역사는 오늘도 계속되어야 하며, 성도는 성령의 충만함을 받아야 한다. 교회는 성령 안에서 다시 태어나야 한다.

모이면 기도하고, 흩어지면 전도하는 것이 교회의 사명이다. 성도는 뜨겁게 사랑하며 하나 되어야 한다. 변질은 패망을 부르지만, 변화는 예수를 믿는 삶의 본질이자 능력이다. 하나님 편에 굳게 선 한 사람이 이 시대에 꼭 필요하다. 아합 시대 850 대 1로 싸운 엘리야처럼, 우리도 믿음의 불씨가 되어야 한다. 우리는 의의 병기요, 평화의 도구요, 축복의 통로로 쓰임 받아야 한다.

예수 그리스도는 새 역사의 주역이시며, 그분과 함께하는 삶이 이 시대의 유일한 소망이다. 금식하며 기도하는 교수들이 있는 한, 한국 교회와 이 민족에는 살아 있는 희망이 있다.

우리 모두 동력 없는 객차를 이끄는 화차처럼, 뒤에서 믿음으로 밀어주는 하나님의 사람이 되자. "힘으로도 되지 아니하며, 능으로도 되지 아니하고, 오직 나의 영으로 되느니라" (슥 4:6).

기도를 쉬지 않는 자들이 교회의 거룩한 불씨이며, 하나님이 지금 이 시대에 찾으시는 귀하고 소중한 사람들이다.

Professors Who Came to a Fasting Prayer Retreat

One day, after finishing a regular meeting at the Gangnam Fasting Prayer Retreat and sitting down for a meal, the administrative pastor of the prayer center spoke to me.

“Pastor, last week professors from your denomination—Baekseok Theological University—came here and spent an entire week fasting and praying. This is the first time in the history of our prayer center that professors have come like this.”

At that moment, I was reminded of the time when my son was appointed as a professor at Baekseok Theological University. Back then, I had prayed and fasted for three days. Professors at Baekseok institutions regularly participate in two weeks of spiritual formation training every semester. All of this stems from the sound faith and firm sense of mission of Pastor Jang Jong-hyun, who founded the Baekseok denomination and its educational institutions.

Pastor Jang proclaims Life Theology: “Only Jesus, New Life.”
The abundant new life given to those who receive Jesus as Savior (John 10:10) is the joy and peace of heart that the Lord grants. Life together with the living Triune God is the very essence of theology. Life Theology goes beyond dead doctrine and emphasizes the living Word—real, experiential union with Jesus Christ Himself. This has been possible because of a firm decision to follow the unchanging Word of God and Jesus Christ, rather than the philosophies of the world. It stands as a model for raising leaders in whom theology and spirituality are never separated.

When we look at the present age, we see before our eyes the very signs Jesus spoke of concerning the last days. At such a time as this, we must be alert, sober-minded, and watchful in prayer. The work of the Holy Spirit seen in the Book of Acts must continue even today, and believers must be filled with the Holy Spirit. The church must be reborn in the Spirit.

The mission of the church is this: when we gather, we pray; when we scatter, we evangelize. Believers must love one another fervently and stand united. Corruption leads to destruction, but transformation is the very essence and power of a life that believes in Jesus.

What this age desperately needs is even one person who stands firmly on God’s side. Like Elijah, who stood alone against 850 in the days of Ahab, we too must become sparks of faith. We are to be used as instruments of righteousness, tools of peace, and channels of blessing.

Jesus Christ is the Lord of a new history, and life with Him is the only hope for this age. As long as there are professors who fast and pray, there remains a living hope for the Korean church and for this nation.

Let us all become God’s people who push from behind in faith—like a powered engine pushing unpowered train cars forward.

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the LORD (Zechariah 4:6).

Those who do not cease to pray are the holy embers of the church, and they are the precious people whom God is seeking in this very age.
