1600년대 초, 영국은 기독교 박해가 극심했다. 당시 가톨릭 신자였던 메리 여왕은 개신교도들을 심하게 탄압했다. 몇 년 전, 나는 스코틀랜드 에든버러의 포도원교회 부흥회를 마친 후, 소위 ‘피의 메리(Bloody Mary)’가 기독교인들을 박해했던 장소들을 직접 돌아보았다. 가장 먼저 찾아간 곳은 해변에 있는 감옥이었다. 무기형을 선고받은 기독교인들이 갇혀 있던 그곳을 내려가 보니, 지하에 비밀 통로가 있었고 그 끝은 깊은 바다로 이어져 있었다. 죽은 자들의 시체는 그 바다로 던져져 바다생물의 먹이가 되었다고 한다.
도시 이곳저곳에는 기독교인들을 화형(火刑)으로 공개 처형했던 장소들이 남아 있었다. 그러나 내 눈에서 뜨거운 눈물이 솟구쳤던 곳은 바로 ‘뚜껑 없는 감옥’이었다. 그곳은 신실한 기독교인 부부와 어린 자녀 셋이 함께 갇혀 있었던 감옥이다. 사방은 140cm 높이의 돌담으로 둘러싸여 있었고, 지붕은 없었다.
메리 여왕은 그들에게 이렇게 말했다. “살아서 집으로 가고 싶거든 예수 그리스도를 부인하라. 그렇지 않으면 여기서 죽게 될 것이다.” 그러나 그들 모두는 천국에 대한 소망을 품고 끝내 굶어 죽었다.
이 일을 기념하기 위해, 그 감옥은 지금까지 보존되어 있다. 바로 그와 같은 시대에 독실한 청교도 102명이 신앙의 자유를 찾아 66일간 대서양을 건너갔고, 결국 오늘날 세계 최강국인 미국을 세우는 씨앗이 되었다.
살아계신 하나님께서 오늘 우리에게 말씀하신다. “우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자, 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라.”(롬 8:28)
지금 이 세상의 인구는 약 80억 명이며, 그중 약 6%인 4억8천만 명이 우울증을 앓고 있다고 한다. 과거보다 지식과 경제는 높아졌지만, 심지어 기독교인들 사이에서도 우울과 자살이 늘어나는 현실이다.
그 이유는 사랑의 대상과 우선순위를 바꾸었기 때문이다. 돈과 자신, 쾌락을 하나님보다 더 사랑하는 데 문제가 있다(딤후 3:1~4). 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접하고 영생을 얻은 자는 그 어떤 것보다 주님을 더욱 사랑해야 한다.
우리 기독교는 예수 그리스도께서 지신 대속의 십자가와 앞서간 순교자들의 피 위에 세워졌다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 이제라도 상황윤리(狀況倫理)를 십자가에 못 박아야 한다. 모든 그리스도인은 한 알의 밀알처럼 땅에 떨어져 죽어 많은 열매를 맺어야 한다. 이러한 자들에게 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 가지신 주님께서 세상 끝날까지 항상 함께하실 것임을 믿는다(마 28:18~20).
A Prison Without a Roof
In the early 1600s, England was a place of severe persecution against Christians. At that time, Queen Mary who was Catholic, harshly oppressed Protestants. Some years ago, after finishing a revival meeting at the Vineyard Church in Edinburgh, Scotland, I personally visited several sites where so-called “Bloody Mary” had persecuted Christians.
The first place I visited was a prison by the sea. When I went down to the site where Christians sentenced to life imprisonment had been held, I discovered an underground secret passage that led straight into the deep sea. The bodies of those who died were thrown into the water and became food for sea creatures.
Scattered throughout the city were places where Christians had been publicly executed by burning. Yet the place that caused hot tears to well up in my eyes was what is known as the “prison without a roof.” This was a place where a faithful Christian couple and their three young children were imprisoned together. The prison was surrounded by stone walls about 140 centimeters high, but it had no roof.
Queen Mary said to them, “If you want to go home alive, deny Jesus Christ. If not, you will die here.”
Holding firmly to their hope of heaven, all of them refused—and eventually starved to death.
That prison has been preserved to this day in memory of what happened there. Around that same era, 102 devout Puritans crossed the Atlantic Ocean for 66 days in search of religious freedom, and they became the seed that eventually gave rise to what is now the world’s most powerful nation, the United States.
The living God speaks to us today.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
Today, the world’s population is about eight billion, and approximately 6 percent—around 480 million people—are said to suffer from depression. Although knowledge and economic prosperity have increased compared to the past, depression and even suicide are rising, even among Christians.
The reason is that people have changed the object and priority of their love. The problem lies in loving money, self, and pleasure more than God (2 Timothy 3:1–4). Those who have received Jesus Christ as Savior and gained eternal life must love the Lord more than anything else.
We must remember that Christianity is built upon the atoning cross of Jesus Christ and the blood of the martyrs who went before us. It is time to crucify situational ethics on the cross. Every Christian must fall into the ground like a grain of wheat and die, in order to bear much fruit.
To such people, the Lord who has all authority in heaven and on earth—promises to be with them always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:18–20).
