살리기 위해 죽인다
나의 신학교 시절에 있었던 일이다. 당시 독립문교회를 담임하고 계시던 임영재 목사님께서 인도하시는 부흥회에 참석했다가 받은 은혜가 지금도 생생하다.
목사님께서 전도사 시절, 어느 시골 마을의 작은 교회에서 부흥회를 마치고 돌아오던 길에, 그 동네 공동 우물가에 수많은 사람들이 모여 웅성거리고 있었다. 무슨 일인지 알아보니, 사람들은 "도깨비가 지금 저 우물 안에 있다!"라고 말하고 있었다.
우물 안을 들여다보니 파란 불빛 두 개가 켜졌다 꺼졌다를 반복하고 있었다. 기다란 막대기로 조심스럽게 찔러보았더니 "야옹!" 하는 소리가 들렸다. 플래시를 가져와 비춰보니, 그곳에는 고양이가 빠져 허우적거리고 있었다.
사람들은 깜깜한 밤에 보이는 파란 불빛만 보고 그것을 도깨비로 착각한 것이었다.
전도사님은 물에 빠진 고양이를 건져주려고 기다란 막대기를 내밀었지만, 고양이는 그것을 자신을 해치는 것이라 생각하고 날카로운 발톱으로 사정없이 할퀴었다.
전도사님은 고양이를 살리기 위해 잠시 기절시켜야겠다고 생각하고, 막대기로 고양이의 머리를 살짝 쳤다. 그러자 고양이는 기절했고, 더 이상 반항하지 않았다. 전도사님은 고양이를 조심스럽게 건져 올려 따뜻한 방의 포근한 이불로 감싸 두었다. 얼마 후, 고양이는 다시 깨어났다.
이와 같은 일은 하나님 앞에서 우리 인간에게도 일어난다. 하나님께서는 우리의 영혼을 살리기 위해 때때로 우리의 육신을 곤고하게 하실 때가 많다. 성령으로 충만하고 전도에 열심이었던 바울조차도 힘에 겹도록 심한 고난을 겪었다. 그것은 바울이 자신을 의지하지 않고, 오직 죽은 자를 다시 살리시는 하나님만 의지하게 하시려는 뜻이었다(고린도후서 1:8~10).
육신이 곤고할 때는 새벽 기도, 철야 기도, 금식 기도, 산 기도, 수요예배 등에 빠짐없이 참석하던 사람이, 편안해진 이후에는 주일 오전 예배만 참석하게 된다면, 그는 주의 영광을 위한 신앙생활을 하는 것이 아니라 자기중심적인 삶을 살고 있는 것이다.
우리 대한민국이 곤고할 때에는 기독교가 어두운 밤하늘에 빛나는 별과 같았지만, 세계 10대 강국에 진입한 요즘에는 그 첫사랑이 식어가고 있다. 만일 회개하지 않으면, 촛대가 옮겨지게 될 것이다.
서머나 교회는 경제적으로 가난했으나 영적으로는 부요했다(계 2:8-9). 그러나 라오디게아 교회는 경제적으로 부요했으나 영적으로 가난했다. 이런 교회는 지금 예수 그리스도께서 문 밖에 서서 문을 두드리고 계신다(계 3:17-20).
하나님께서 진정으로 사랑하는 자를 살리기 위해 때때로 죽이신다.
To Save, Sometimes Allows Death
This happened during my seminary days. I attended a revival meeting led by Pastor Lim Young-jae, who was then serving at Dongnimmun Church, and the lesson I received has remained vivid ever since.
Pastor Lim once shared a story from his time as a young evangelist. After leading a small revival in a rural village and returning home, he noticed a crowd gathered around the village well, whispering in fear. They claimed, “A goblin is in that well!”
Peering into the well, two blue lights blinked on and off. Pastor Lim carefully prodded with a long stick, and a “meow!” came back. Using a flashlight, he saw a cat struggling in the water. In the darkness, the villagers had mistaken the cat’s blinking eyes for a goblin.
Pastor Lim extended the stick to save the cat, but the cat thought it was under attack and scratched him violently. Realizing he needed to temporarily incapacitate the cat to save it, he gently struck its head with the stick. The cat fainted and stopped struggling. Carefully, Pastor Lim lifted the cat and wrapped it in a warm blanket. Soon after, the cat regained consciousness, safe and unharmed.
This story mirrors God’s work in our lives. Sometimes, God allows our physical or emotional suffering to preserve our souls. Even Paul, full of the Spirit and zealous in ministry, endured severe hardships (2 Corinthians 1:8–10). These trials were meant to keep him from relying on himself and to rely wholly on God, who gives life to the dead.
When a believer grows comfortable, attending only weekly worship instead of daily prayer, early-morning devotionals, all-night prayers, fasting, or midweek services, their faith becomes self-centered rather than God-centered.
In the past, during times of hardship, Korean Christianity shone like stars in a dark night. But now, as the nation has entered the ranks of the world’s top ten economies, that first love is fading. If the church does not repent, the lampstand may be removed.
Consider the churches of Smyrna and Laodicea. Smyrna was poor materially but rich spiritually (Revelation 2:8–9). Laodicea, on the other hand, was wealthy materially but spiritually poor. Today, Jesus stands at the door, knocking, waiting for us to open (Revelation 3:17–20).
Truly, God sometimes allows hardship—or even “death”—to save those He loves. Like the cat rescued from the well, He works in ways that may seem harsh but are meant for life.
