하얀 거짓말
어느 주일 오후였다. 봉천여중 3학년에 재학 중인 석주가 조심스레 내 방에 들어왔다.
“목사님, 지금 저와 오빠 둘은 3일째 금식 중입니다.”
“무슨 일이니?”
“우리 엄마 전도를 위해서요.”
당시 삼 남매는 교회에 꾸준히 출석하고 있었지만, 어머니는 아직 믿지 않는 분이었다. 얼마 전, 건축업자로 일하던 아버지가 갑작스레 세상을 떠나셨고, 어머니는 자녀들의 학비와 생계를 책임지기 위해 포장마차에서 술을 팔고 계셨다.
석주는 망설이다가 조심스럽게 말을 꺼냈다.
“목사님, 하얀 거짓말을 한 번만 해주실 수 있을까요?”
석주는 여리고 성의 기생 라합이 했던 말을 한것이다. 여호수아가 보낸 두 정탐꾼을 숨기고는, 그들이 이미 떠났다고 말했던 라합. 석주는 그것을 ‘하얀 거짓말’이라고 표현했다. 그리고 말했다.
“엄마가 원래 노는 걸 좋아하세요. 이번 제직 수련회를 ‘대둔산 놀러 가는 거’라고 하면, 아마 따라나서실 거예요.”
어머니의 영혼 구원을 위해 금식까지 하며 눈물로 부탁하는 이 딸의 진심 앞에, 나는 감동하지 않을 수 없었다. 그래서 석주의 말대로, 단 한 번의 하얀 거짓말을 해보았다. 그런데 놀랍게도, 정말 그대로 되었다.
그 수련회에서 석주의 어머니는 성령을 체험하고 회개했으며, 포장마차를 정리하고 새로운 삶을 시작하셨다. 그후에 가락동 시장에서 생선 가게를 운영하며, 교회 모범 권사로 든든히 서 계신다. 석주 역시 대학을 졸업한 뒤 목회자의 아내로 헌신 중이다.
하나님이 귀히 쓰시는 사람들에겐 공통점이 있다.
- 그들은 믿음으로 기도하고, 금식으로 기도하며, 합심하여 기도한다.
- 기도는 사람이 할 수 없는 일을, 하나님께서 하시게 하는 통로다.
“너는 내게 부르짖으라, 내가 네게 응답하겠고 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 보이리라” (렘 33:3)
예수께서 제자들을 택하신 목적도 전도였고(막 3:14), 성령을 부어주신 이유도 복음 전파였으며(행 1:8), 교회를 세우신 뜻도 영혼 구원에 있다(요 15:16).
이처럼 복음의 선한 목적을 따라 사는 자들이야말로 진정으로 예수 그리스도를 닮은 사람들이다(막 1:38).
하지만 지금 우리는 그 첫사랑을 잃어가고 있지 않은가?
기도의 눈물도, 전도의 열정도, 복음의 감격도 식어가고 있지 않은가?
회개하라. 다시 시작하라.
촛대가 옮겨지기 전에, 첫사랑을 회복하라.
“회개하여 처음 행위를 가지라… 그렇지 않으면 촛대를 옮기리라” (계 2:5)고 주님은 말씀하신다.
White Lie
One Sunday afternoon, Seokju, a third-year student at Bongcheon Girls’ Middle School, quietly entered my room.
“Pastor, my older brother and I have been fasting for three days now.”
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“For my mom’s salvation,” he said.
At that time, the three siblings regularly attended church, but their mother had not yet come to faith. Recently, their father, who worked as a construction worker, had passed away suddenly, and their mother was supporting the family by selling alcohol at a street stall.
Seokju hesitated, then spoke carefully:
“Pastor, could you tell just one ‘white lie’?”
He was referring to Rahab in the city of Jericho. Rahab had hidden the two spies sent by Joshua and told the authorities that they had already left. Seokju called this a “white lie” and explained:
“My mom likes to have fun. If we tell her that the church retreat is ‘a trip to Daedunsan Mountain,’ she will probably come along.”
Moved by the child’s sincere plea, fasting and crying for her mother’s salvation, I agreed to tell the “white lie” just once. Remarkably, it worked exactly as Seokju predicted. During the retreat, his mother experienced the Holy Spirit, repented, closed her street stall, and began a new life. She now runs a fish shop at Garak Market and faithfully serves as a model deacon at church. Seokju graduated from college and is now devoted as a pastor’s wife.
There is a common trait among those whom God uses mightily.
- They pray in faith, they pray through fasting, and they pray together in unity.
- Prayer is the channel through which God accomplishes what humans cannot.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and hidden things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3).
Jesus chose His disciples for the purpose of evangelism (Mark 3:14), poured out the Holy Spirit to empower the preaching of the Gospel (Acts 1:8), and established the church for the salvation of souls (John 15:16).
Those who live according to the good purpose of the Gospel are the ones who truly reflect Jesus Christ (Mark 1:38).
Yet, have we not lost that first love? Have the tears of prayer, the passion for evangelism, and the joy of the Gospel grown cold?
Repent. Start again. Restore your first love before the lampstand is removed.
“Repent, and do the first works, or else I will come to you and remove your lampstand” (Revelation 2:5).
