시험에 합격하는 자
이 세상에는 다양한 시험 제도가 존재한다. 입학시험, 자격시험, 진급시험 등은 우리의 능력과 지식을 평가하기 위해 실시된다. 이러한 시험들은 '선의(善意)'에 의한 시험으로, 그 목적은 개인의 성장을 돕고 잠재력을 발휘하게 하는 데 있다. 이와 같은 선의의 시험에 합격하면 영광이 따르고, 실패한다면 교훈을 얻고 발전의 기회를 삼게 된다.
신앙생활에서도 시험이 있다. 그러나 신앙생활의 시험은 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 하나는 하나님께서 허락하시는 선의의 시험이고, 다른 하나는 마귀가 던지는 악의(惡意)적인 시험이다. 악의적인 시험의 목적은 하나님의 뜻을 따르지 못하게 하고, 성도를 넘어뜨리려는 것이다. 이러한 시험을 의미하는 헬라어는 '페이라조(πειράζω)'이며, 영어로는 '유혹(temptation)'이라고 번역된다. 예를 들어, 삼손은 블레셋이 보낸 여간첩 들릴라의 유혹에 넘어가 두 눈을 잃었고(삿 16장), 아간은 재물의 유혹에 빠져 하나님의 명령을 어기고 온 가족이 처형당하는 비극을 맞았다(수 7장). 사울 왕은 명예의 유혹에 빠져 다윗을 시기하고 미워하다가 결국 비참한 최후를 맞았다.
마귀의 시험에 맞설 수 있는 힘은 이미 기록된 하나님의 말씀에 있다. 예수님께서 광야에서 마귀의 시험을 말씀으로 물리치신 것처럼(마태복음 4:1-11), 우리 역시 말씀에 의지하여 대적해야 한다.
한편, 하나님께서 주시는 선의의 시험도 있다. 이러한 시험은 헬라어로 '도키마조(δοκιμάζω)'라고 표현되며, 영어로는 '테스트(test)'라고 번역된다. 이 단어는 '조사하다', '검사하다', '진위를 알아보다'라는 의미를 지닌다. 하나님께서 주시는 시험은 우리의 믿음을 연단하고, 순종의 깊이를 확인하기 위한 목적을 가진다. 아브라함은 백세에 얻은 아들 이삭을 바치라는 시험을 받았고, 하나님께 순종하여 큰 복을 약속받았다(창 22:1-19). 요셉은 보디발 아내의 유혹을 물리치고 억울하게 감옥에 갇혔지만, 하나님의 섭리로 애굽의 총리가 되었다. 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고는 금신상에 절하라는 명령을 거부하고 불 속에서도 하나님의 보호를 받았다(단 3장).
올바른 믿음으로 하나님과 동행하는 사람은 하나님의 시험에 합격하는 자이다. 예수님처럼 "나의 원대로 하지 마옵시고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서"라고 기도하며 하나님의 뜻에 순종해야 한다(마26:39).
승리의 삶이란 이 세상에서 하나님께서 주시는 선의의 시험에 합격하는 삶이다.
Those Who Pass the Test
In this world, there are many kinds of examinations. Entrance exams, qualification tests, and promotion exams are conducted to evaluate our abilities and knowledge. These tests are given with good intent, and their purpose is to help individuals grow and develop their potential. When one passes such well-intentioned tests, honor follows; when one fails, lessons are learned and opportunities for growth are gained.
There are also tests in the life of faith. However, spiritual tests can be divided into two kinds. One is the test permitted by God with good intent, and the other is the malicious test cast by the devil. The purpose of the devil’s test is to prevent believers from following God’s will and to cause them to fall. The Greek word for this kind of test is peirazō (πειράζω), which is translated into English as temptation. For example, Samson fell to the temptation of Delilah, a Philistine agent, and lost his eyesight (Judges 16). Achan fell into the temptation of material wealth, disobeyed God’s command, and brought destruction upon his entire family (Joshua 7). King Saul fell into the temptation of honor and status, became jealous of David, and eventually met a tragic end.
The power to resist the devil’s tests is found in the already written Word of God. Just as Jesus defeated the devil’s temptations in the wilderness with Scripture (Matthew 4:1–11), we too must stand against temptation by relying on God’s Word.
On the other hand, there are also tests given by God with good intent. These tests are expressed by the Greek word dokimazō (δοκιμάζω), which is translated as test. This word means “to examine,” “to prove,” or “to determine what is genuine.” God’s tests are meant to refine our faith and to confirm the depth of our obedience. Abraham was tested by being asked to offer his son Isaac, whom he had received at the age of one hundred, and because of his obedience, he was promised great blessing (Genesis 22:1–19). Joseph resisted the temptation of Potiphar’s wife and was unjustly imprisoned, but through God’s providence he became the governor of Egypt. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow before the golden image and were protected by God even in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3).
Those who walk with God in true faith are the ones who pass God’s tests. Like Jesus, we must pray, “Not as I will, but as You will,” and obey the will of the Father (Matthew 26:39).
A victorious life is a life that passes the good and purposeful tests given by God in this world.
