수시로 변하는 솔트 라인(Salt Line)
이 세상에는 변하는 것과 변하지 않는 것이 있다. 만유인력의 법칙은 변하지 않지만, 솔트 라인(Salt Line)은 상황에 따라 변한다.
솔트 라인은 바닷물과 민물이 만나는 경계선이다. 바닷물에는 염분이 3.5% 포함되어 있어 짜지만, 민물은 그렇지 않다. 예를 들어, 뉴욕의 허드슨강에서는 장마가 오면 강물이 많아져 솔트 라인이 바다로 밀려나고, 가뭄이 들면 바닷물이 상류로 올라와 솔트 라인이 안쪽으로 이동한다. 자연에서도 변화는 불가피하고 예측할 수 없다.
이 원리는 영적 신앙에도 적용된다. 세상은 죄악으로 가득하고 마귀의 유혹이 많지만, 우리가 예수님과 성경, 교회, 전도, 충성의 가치를 붙들면, 강물이 바닷물을 밀어내듯 죄악을 밀어낼 수 있다. 우리가 육신의 일을 하더라도 그것이 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 일(고전 10:31)이라면 문제가 되지 않는다. 우리의 삶도 하나님의 뜻을 반영할 때만 변하지 않고 온전하게 이루어진다.
그러나 영적인 일에 소홀하면 신앙이 약해지고 결국 세속화된다. 신앙은 매일의 선택과 실천을 통해 자라야 한다. 성경은 "내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라"(빌 1:21)라고 말한다. 신앙은 미룰 수 없는 삶의 본질이다. "보라 지금은 은혜받을 만한 때요 지금은 구원의 날이로다"(고후 6:2). 과거에 신앙이 좋았다고 해서 현재도 좋을 것이라 생각하면 안 된다. 신앙은 지속적인 실천이 필요하다.
세상은 변하지만 하나님의 사랑과 능력은 변하지 않는다. "주께서 심지가 견고한 자를 평강 가운데 지키시리니 이는 그가 주를 신뢰함이니이다"(사 26:3). 그러나 세상의 변화에 따라 신앙도 바꾸려는 사람들이 있다. 동성애를 지지하는 일부 교회처럼 성경의 가치를 세상 기준에 맞추려는 것은 잘못된 일이다.
"근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니"(벧전5:8). 그러나 우리 주 예수 그리스도는 "어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하시니라"(히 13:8). 그러므로 우리는 하나님을 변함없이 사랑해야 한다(엡6:24).
우리의 영적 상태는 항상 생수의 강물이 차고 넘쳐 흐르듯 해야 한다(겔 47장). 그래야 죄악과 유혹을 물리치고 하나님의 거룩한 뜻을 이룰 수 있다.
The Ever-Changing Salt Line
In this world, there are things that change and things that do not. The law of gravity never changes, but the salt line changes depending on circumstances.
The salt line is the boundary where seawater and freshwater meet. Seawater contains about 3.5% salt and is salty, while freshwater is not. For example, in the Hudson River in New York, when there is heavy rainfall, the river swells and pushes the salt line out toward the sea. During a drought, seawater moves upstream and the salt line shifts inland. Even in nature, change is inevitable and unpredictable.
This principle also applies to spiritual faith. The world is full of sin and the temptations of the devil, but when we hold firmly to Jesus, the Bible, the church, evangelism, and faithfulness, we can push sin away just as a river pushes back the sea. Even when we engage in worldly activities, if they are done for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31), there is no problem. Our lives remain unshaken and are made complete only when they reflect God’s will.
However, when we neglect spiritual matters, our faith weakens and eventually becomes secularized. Faith must grow through daily choices and practice. Scripture says, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). Faith is the essence of life and cannot be postponed. “Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). We must not assume that because our faith was strong in the past, it will automatically be strong today. Faith requires continual practice.
The world changes, but God’s love and power do not. “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3). Yet some people try to change their faith according to the changes of the world. Adjusting biblical values to fit worldly standards such as some churches that support homosexuality is wrong.
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). But our Lord Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Therefore, we must love God without wavering (Ephesians 6:24).
Our spiritual condition should always be like a river of living water flowing abundantly (Ezekiel 47). Only then can we repel sin and temptation and fulfill God’s holy will.
