2025년 1월 20일(현지 시각), 도널드 트럼프(Donald John Trump)의 취임식이 열렸다. 원래 워싱턴 D.C. 국회의사당 앞 야외에서 진행될 예정이었으나 혹한으로 인해 캐피털 원 아레나로 변경되었다. 트럼프는 미국의 제47대 대통령으로 취임하며, 아내 멜라니아가 성경을 두 손으로 받쳐 들고 있는 가운데, 그는 오른손을 들고 성경의 가르침을 따라 일할 것을 선서했다.
취임식은 하나님께 드리는 예배로 시작되었다. 찬송가 마귀들과 싸울지라가 울려 퍼지며 감동적인 장면이 연출되었고, 기도자는 느헤미야 1장 11절을 인용하며 “오늘 종이 형통하여 이 사람들 앞에서 은혜를 입게 하옵소서”라고 기도한 뒤, “예수의 이름으로 기도합니다”라고 마무리했다. 이전까지는 종교 다원주의적 관례에 따라 “여러 신들의 이름으로 기도합니다”라고 했으나, 이번에는 전통적인 방식으로 진행되었다. 이를 보며, 우리나라에서도 신앙의 가치를 분명히 드러내는 대통령 취임식이 이루어지면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다.
트럼프는 취임 연설에서 “미국 우선주의(America First)”를 외치며 미국의 재건을 다짐했다. 또한 “하나님께서 남성과 여성만을 창조하셨다”라며 동성애가 성경적이지 않음을 강조했다. 그는 국익을 우선하며 세계 질서를 지킬 것을 다짐하고, “나는 전능하신 하나님(Almighty God)을 믿는다”라고 선언했다.
미국은 청교도들에 의해 세워진 나라다. 그들의 흔적은 플리머스 민속촌 기념탑에 남아 있다. 이 기념탑에는 큰 반석 위에 네 개의 기둥이 세워져 있는데, 반석은 예수 그리스도를 상징하며 그 위에는 "믿음(Faith)"이라고 적혀 있다. 첫 번째 기둥은 "자유(Liberty)"로, 그 안에는 "평화(Peace)"가 포함되며, 폭군을 용납하지 않는다는 의미를 담고 있다. 두 번째 기둥은 "교육(Education)"으로, 젊은이들에게 교육의 기회를 제공하여 지혜를 얻도록 하는 목적을 담고 있다. 세 번째 기둥은 "법(Law)"으로, 공정과 긍휼을 강조하며, 회개하는 죄인은 용서받는다고 적혀 있다. 마지막 기둥은 "도덕성(Morality)"으로, 선지자가 하나님의 말씀을 대언해야 하며 모든 일이 전도적이어야 한다는 의미를 담고 있다.
미국의 지폐에도 "우리는 하나님을 믿는다(We Trust in God)"라는 문구가 새겨져 있다. 이런 나라를 세계 으뜸 국가로 세우신 것이야말로 성경의 가르침대로 이루어진 것 아닌가(신28:1).

On January 20, 2025 (local time), the inauguration of Donald John Trump was held. It was originally scheduled to take place outdoors in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., but due to extreme cold, the venue was changed to Capital One Arena. Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. As his wife Melania held the Bible with both hands, he raised his right hand and swore to carry out his duties in accordance with the teachings of the Bible.
The inauguration began with a worship service offered to God. The hymn “Onward, Christian Soldiers” rang out, creating a deeply moving moment. The person leading the prayer quoted Nehemiah 1:11, praying, “Grant your servant success today and give him favor in the presence of these people,” and concluded with, “I pray in the name of Jesus.” Previously, in accordance with religious pluralism, prayers had ended with phrases such as “in the names of many gods,” but this time the ceremony followed a more traditional approach. Watching this, I thought it would be good if our own country also held presidential inaugurations that clearly expressed the value of faith.
In his inaugural address, Trump proclaimed “America First” and pledged to rebuild the United States. He also emphasized that “God created only male and female,” stating that homosexuality is not biblical. He vowed to put national interests first and to uphold the global order, and declared, “I believe in Almighty God.”
The United States is a nation founded by the Puritans. Their legacy remains in the monument at Plymouth Plantation. On this monument, four pillars stand upon a large rock. The rock symbolizes Jesus Christ, and the word “Faith” is inscribed upon it. The first pillar is “Liberty,” which includes “Peace” within it and conveys the meaning of tolerating no tyrants. The second pillar is “Education,” representing the goal of providing educational opportunities to the young so they may gain wisdom. The third pillar is “Law,” emphasizing fairness and mercy, with the inscription that repentant sinners are forgiven. The final pillar is “Morality,” conveying that prophets must proclaim the word of God and that all things should be evangelistic in nature.
On U.S. currency is also engraved the phrase, “We Trust in God.” That such a nation has been established as the world’s leading country could this not be something accomplished according to the teachings of the Bible (Deuteronomy 28:1)?
