성경에 나오는 인물들 가운데 하나님께서 오른손으로 붙드시고, 의의 병기로 귀하게 사용하신 사람들에게는 공통점이 있다. 그들은 어떤 경우에도 사람 편에 서지 않고, 오직 하나님 편에 선 자들이었다.

로마 정부가 이스라엘의 총독으로 세운 빌라도는 예수님에게서 아무런 죄를 찾지 못했기에 그분을 풀어주려고 했다(요 19:6). 그러나 유대교 지도자들이 합심하여 큰 소리로 부르짖자, 결국 그들의 압박을 이기지 못하고 예수님을 십자가에 못 박도록 허락하고 만다(요 19:12, 눅 23:23~25).

양심의 소리 나 하나님의 음성보다 사람들의 소리를 따르는 것은 큰 죄이다. 선을 행해야 할 줄 알면서도 행하지 않는 것은 죽은 믿음이다(약 2:26). 거룩한 불씨란 하나님께서 말씀하시면 “예, 예” 하고 따르는 자들이다. 이런 자들이 바로 창조적 소수다.

하나님의 공동체인 교회는 다수의 의견보다 하나님의 뜻을 우선적으로 따르는 하나님 제일주의가 되어야 한다.

과거 모세는 가데스 바네아에서 가나안 땅으로 열두 명의 정탐꾼을 보냈다. 그러나 돌아온 정탐꾼 중 열 명은 가나안 원주민들이 장대한 체격을 가지고 있으며 성읍들이 견고하므로 갈 수 없다고 보고했다. 반면, 갈렙과 여호수아 두 사람은 “하나님께서 우리와 함께하실 것이니 올라가서 그 땅을 차지하자”라고 말했으나, 오히려 돌에 맞아 죽을 뻔했다(민 13~14).

모세는 다수결의 원칙인 민주주의를 따르지 않고, 오직 여호와 하나님의 말씀을 신뢰하는 두 사람과 함께했다. 훗날 여호수아는 모세의 후계자가 되었고, 갈렙은 아낙 자손과 싸워 이기며 난공불락의 도성 헤브론을 차지했다(수 14:13~14).

예나 지금이나 마찬가지다. 교회마다 거룩한 불씨가 있다. 기도의 불씨, 전도의 불씨, 헌금의 불씨, 헌신과 봉사의 불씨가 있다. 그들은 땅에 떨어져 죽는 한 알의 밀알과 같다(요 12:24).

이러한 불씨들은 여호와를 신뢰함으로 견고히 서며, 또한 주의 종(담임목사)을 신뢰함으로 형통하게 된다(대하 20:20).

지금 하나님께서 찾으시는 자는 거룩한 불씨다. 우리 각자는 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 거룩한 불씨가 되어야 한다. 그것이 삶의 의미이며, 가치이며, 또한 목적이다(빌 1:20~21). 세상은 점점 하나님의 뜻보다 다수의 의견을 따르려 하지만, 하나님께서는 여전히 창조적 소수를 통해 일하신다.

믿음의 사람들은 환경을 보고 흔들리지 않는다. 현실이 아무리 어려워도 하나님의 말씀을 붙들고 나아갈 때, 하나님께서 친히 길을 열어주신다. 우리가 그 불씨가 될 때, 온 세상을 변화시키는 거룩한 불길이 일어날 것이다.

A God-centered Minority

Among the figures in the Bible, those whom God upheld with His right hand and used as mighty instruments of righteousness share a common trait: they always stood on God’s side, not humanity’s.

Pontius Pilate, appointed by the Roman government as governor over Israel, found no fault in Jesus and initially sought to release Him (John 19:6). Yet when the Jewish leaders loudly pressured him, Pilate eventually succumbed to their demands and allowed Jesus to be crucified (John 19:12; Luke 23:23–25).

Choosing the voice of people over one’s conscience or the voice of God is a grave sin. Knowing the right but failing to act is dead faith (James 2:26). A “holy spark” is someone who responds to God’s word with an unwavering “Yes, yes.” These are the creative minority. In God’s community—the church—the priority must always be God’s will above majority opinion.

A similar example is found with Moses at Kadesh Barnea. He sent twelve spies into Canaan. Ten returned fearful, reporting that the inhabitants were giants and the cities too fortified to conquer. Only Caleb and Joshua trusted God, saying, “The Lord is with us; let us go up and take possession of the land” (Numbers 13–14). They even faced stoning for their faith.

Moses did not follow the democratic principle of majority rule; he trusted God’s word and stood with the two faithful men. Eventually, Joshua became Moses’ successor, and Caleb conquered the seemingly impregnable city of Hebron (Joshua 14:13–14).

The principle remains today. Every church has its “holy sparks”—sparks of prayer, evangelism, giving, dedication, and service. Like a seed grain that falls to the ground and dies, these sparks may seem small but bear great fruit (John 12:24). They stand firm by trusting the Lord and prosper by trusting His servants (2 Chronicles 20:20).

God is still seeking holy sparks—each of us is called to be one. This is the meaning, value, and purpose of life (Philippians 1:20–21). While the world increasingly follows the majority over God’s will, God works through creative minorities.

Those with faith do not waver in the face of circumstances. No matter how difficult reality may be, holding fast to God’s word allows Him to open the way. When we become such sparks, a holy fire will arise to transform the entire world.
