우리 그리스도인의 최고의 영광은 언제나 주 안에서 누리는 기쁨이다. 전지전능하신 하나님과 동행하는 삶의 확증 가운데 하나는 바로 “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하는 것”이다. 사도 바울은 분명히 권면한다. “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라”(빌 4:4).

하나님이 주시는 기쁨이 마음에 있는 사람의 얼굴은 밝다. 입가에는 온유한 미소가 있고, 다른 이를 겸손히 섬기는 삶 속에서 예수님의 향기가 드러난다. 그렇다면 하나님은 어떤 사람의 마음에 이런 기쁨을 주시는가?

성경은 분명히 말한다. 회개하는 자다(행 3:19). 죄는 우리로 하여금 하나님의 형상을 잃어버리게 하지만 회개는 그 형상을 회복하게 한다. 이렇게 회복된 사람이 곧 그리스도에게 속한 자, 그리스도를 닮아가는 참된 그리스도인이다.

사람은 자신이 소중히 여기는 것을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 그 가치를 안다. 몇 해 전, 독일 베를린에서 사역을 마친 후 스위스로 이동하던 중의 일이다. 고속도로 휴게소에서 식사를 마친 뒤 출발했는데, 아내가 갑자기 손가방을 두고 왔다고 말했다. 그 안에는 여권과 현금이 모두 들어 있었다. 급히 차를 돌려 식당으로 돌아갔고, 다행히 가방은 그대로 보관되어 있었다. 여권도 현금도 손상 없이 남아 있었다. 그 순간 아내는 기쁨의 눈물을 흘렸다.

잃은 것을 다시 찾는 기쁨은 경험해 본 사람만이 안다. 그러나 이것보다 더 크고 귀한 기쁨이 있다. 하나님의 소원, 곧 한 죄인이 회개하고 하나님께로 돌아오는 일이다. 예수님은 누가복음 15장에서 잃은 양, 잃은 드라크마, 그리고 탕자의 비유를 통해 그 기쁨을 가르쳐 주셨다. “죄인 한 사람이 회개하면 하늘에서는 회개할 것 없는 의인 아흔아홉으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 것보다 더하리라”(눅 15:7).

항상 기쁨이 충만한 교회는 전도가 살아 있는 교회다. 불신자가 거듭나 그리스도인이 될 때, 땅에서도 하늘에서도 기쁨이 일어난다.

예수께서 이 세상에 오신 목적도 전도였고(막 1:38), 제자들을 부르신 목적도 전도였으며(막 3:14), 성령을 주신 목적도 증인이 되게 하심이었다(행 1:8). 사도 바울은 이 사명을 위해 성령에 매인 사람이 되었고(행 20:22-24), 눈물로 만류하는 성도들을 뒤로한 채 복음의 길을 걸어갔다(행 21:12-14).

이것이 예수 중심의 삶이다. 우리 모두가 잃은 영혼을 다시 찾는 기쁨을 날마다 누리기를 소망한다. 주 안에서의 기쁨은 회개로 시작되고, 전도로 완성된다.

Restored Joy]

The greatest glory of us Christians is the joy we always enjoy in the Lord. One clear evidence of a life that walks with the Almighty God is this: “always rejoicing in the Lord.” The Apostle Paul exhorts us plainly, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).

A person whose heart is filled with the joy that God gives has a bright countenance. A gentle smile rests on their lips, and in a life of humbly serving others, the fragrance of Jesus is revealed. Then the question is: to whom does God give such joy?

The Bible is clear: to those who repent (Acts 3:19). Sin causes us to lose the image of God, but repentance restores that image. The one who is thus restored belongs to Christ and becomes a true Christian who grows to resemble Him.

People often realize the value of something only after they lose it. Several years ago, after finishing ministry in Berlin, Germany, I was traveling to Switzerland. After eating at a highway rest stop, we departed, but my wife suddenly realized she had left her handbag behind. Inside were her passport and all her cash. We quickly turned the car around and returned to the restaurant. Thankfully, the bag had been safely kept. The passport and money were all intact. In that moment, my wife shed tears of joy.

Only those who have experienced it know the joy of finding what was lost. Yet there is an even greater and more precious joy: the desire of God—that one sinner repents and returns to Him. In Luke 15, Jesus teaches this joy through the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son: “There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance” (Luke 15:7).

A church that is always full of joy is a church where evangelism is alive. When a non-believer is born again and becomes a Christian, joy arises both on earth and in heaven.

The purpose of Jesus coming into the world was evangelism (Mark 1:38). The purpose of calling His disciples was also evangelism (Mark 3:14). And the purpose of giving the Holy Spirit was to make us His witnesses (Acts 1:8). The Apostle Paul became one bound by the Holy Spirit for this mission (Acts 20:22–24), and he continued on the path of the gospel even as believers tearfully urged him not to go (Acts 21:12–14).



This is a Christ-centered life. May we all experience daily the joy of finding lost souls again. Joy in the Lord begins with repentance and is made complete through evangelism.
