몸에 붙어있는 지체들
아프리카 선교 중 케냐 나이로비의 한 호텔에서 하룻밤을 묵은 적이 있다. 잠에 들려고 누운 순간 천장에 모기 한 마리가 붙어 있는 것을 보았다. 말라리아에 대한 염려가 스쳤고, 결국 잡기로 마음먹었다. 화장실 수건 두 장을 꼬아 작은 방망이를 만들고 의자 위에 올라섰다. 눈은 목표를 향해 집중했고, 손은 힘을 주었으며, 발은 균형을 잡았다. 모기 한 마리를 잡는 그 짧은 순간에도 온몸의 지체들이 협력하고 있었다. 어느 한 부분이라도 제 역할을 하지 않았다면 결과는 달라졌을 것이다.
이 경험은 교회의 본질을 떠올리게 한다. 성경은 교회를 그리스도의 몸이라 말한다(엡 1:23). 그리고 우리 각 사람을 그 몸의 지체라고 한다(고전 12:27). 몸의 지체는 모양도 다르고 기능도 다르다. 다름은 비교의 이유가 아니라 필요의 이유다. 다르기 때문에 서로가 필요하다.
몸의 건강을 좌우하는 결정적인 요소는 ‘머리’다. 머리가 판단하고 지시할 때 지체들은 질서 있게 움직인다. 성경은 예수 그리스도를 교회의 머리라고 선포한다(엡 1:22). 교회가 건강하려면 사람의 생각이나 감정이 중심이 되어서는 안 된다. 머리 되신 주님의 뜻을 분별하고 순종하는 것이 우선이다. 순종은 소극적 복종이 아니라, 몸을 살리는 생명의 질서다.
또한 교회는 단순한 조직이 아니라 영적 가족이다. 예수님은 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 자가 참된 가족이라고 말씀하셨다(마 12:48-50). 가족은 기쁨과 슬픔을 함께 나눈다. 그래서 사도 바울은 “즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라”고 권면한다(롬 12:15). 몸의 한 부분이 아프면 온몸이 아프듯, 공동체의 아픔을 외면하지 않는 것이 교회의 모습이다.
오늘날 교회가 서 있는 자리는 결코 가볍지 않다. 다양한 가치관과 목소리가 충돌하는 시대 속에서 교회는 무엇을 기준으로 설 것인가를 끊임없이 묻는다. 중요한 것은 감정적 반응이나 단순한 대립이 아니다. 말씀에 근거한 분별과 사랑 안에서 진리를 붙드는 태도다. 몸의 지체가 서로 다투면 결국 몸이 약해지듯이, 교회도 분열이 아니라 연합 속에서 사명을 감당해야 한다.
볼록렌즈에 햇빛을 모으면 불이 붙는다. 흩어진 빛은 약하지만, 모인 빛은 힘이 있다. 교회 역시 복음의 본질 위에 마음을 모을 때 세상을 밝히는 빛이 된다. 우리는 각기 다른 자리에서 다른 역할을 맡았지만, 목적은 하나다. 교회를 세우고, 세상을 섬기며, 머리 되신 주님의 뜻을 이루는 것이다.
몸에 붙어 있는 모든 지체가 겸손히 자기 자리를 지키며 협력할 때, 교회는 건강해지고 세상은 그 빛을 보게 될 것이다.
Members Attached to the Body
During a mission trip to Africa, I once stayed overnight at a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. As I lay down to sleep, I noticed a mosquito clinging to the ceiling. Concern about malaria crossed my mind, and I decided to catch it. I twisted two bathroom towels into a small club and stood on a chair. My eyes were fixed on the target, my hands applied force, and my feet kept balance. Even in that brief moment of catching a single mosquito, all the parts of my body were working together. If even one part had failed to do its role, the outcome would have been different.
This experience brings to mind the nature of the church. The Bible describes the church as the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:23), and each of us as members of that body (1 Corinthians 12:27). The parts of the body differ in form and function. These differences are not reasons for comparison, but for necessity. Because we are different, we need one another.
The decisive factor that determines the health of the body is the “head.” When the head makes decisions and gives direction, the members move in order. The Bible declares Jesus Christ as the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22). For a church to be healthy, human thoughts or emotions must not take the center. What matters first is discerning and obeying the will of the Lord, who is the head. Obedience is not passive submission, but the life-giving order that sustains the body.
The church is not merely an organization, but a spiritual family. Jesus said that those who do the will of God are His true family (Matthew 12:48–50). A family shares both joy and sorrow together. That is why the Apostle Paul exhorts us to “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). Just as when one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers, the church does not ignore the pain of its community.
The position in which the church stands today is not a light one. In an age where diverse values and voices collide, the church must continually ask on what standard it will stand. What is important is not emotional reaction or mere opposition, but discernment grounded in the Word and a commitment to hold onto the truth in love. Just as the body weakens when its members fight one another, the church must fulfill its mission not through division, but through unity.
When sunlight is focused through a convex lens, it ignites a fire. Scattered light is weak, but concentrated light has power. In the same way, when the church unites its heart on the essence of the gospel, it becomes a light that shines in the world. Though we each serve in different places and roles, our purpose is one: to build up the church, to serve the world, and to fulfill the will of the Lord, who is the head.
When all the members attached to the body humbly keep their place and work together, the church becomes healthy, and the world will see its light.
