아름답게 피어나는 꽃들
이른 봄이 되면 아직 잎도 나오기 전인데 꽃부터 피어나는 나무들이 있다. 개나리와 진달래, 그리고 벚꽃이 그렇다. 아직 찬 기운이 남아 있지만 이 꽃들은 가장 먼저 봄을 알리며 피어난다. 가을이 되면 또 다른 꽃들이 아름답게 핀다. 코스모스와 국화가 바람 속에서 향기와 빛깔을 더한다. 계절도 다르고 피는 시기도 다르지만 꽃은 언제 피어도 아름답다.
하나님께서 귀하게 사용하시는 사람들도 이와 같다. 어떤 사람은 어린 나이에 하나님께 쓰임을 받고, 어떤 사람은 인생의 늦은 시기에 귀하게 쓰임을 받는다. 중요한 것은 언제 피느냐가 아니라 하나님 앞에서 아름답게 꽃 같이 피어 쓰임을 받느냐는 것이다.
성경에는 이른 봄에 핀 꽃과 같은 사람들이 있다. 다윗은 아직 어린 목동이었지만 블레셋의 장수 골리앗을 물맷돌 하나로 쓰러뜨렸다(삼상 17장). 또 아람 나라 군대 장관 나아만에게 하나님의 선지자를 소개한 사람은 이름도 알려지지 않은 어린 소녀였다(왕하 5장). 예수님께서는 한 아이가 내어놓은 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 통해 오천 명이 넘는 사람들을 먹이시는 기적을 행하셨다. 정성을 다하여 드린 것과 헌신이 하나님의 손에 들려질 때 놀라운 역사가 일어난다.
반면에 가을에 피는 꽃과 같은 사람들도 있다. 갈렙은 85세의 나이에 헤브론의 아낙 자손들과 싸워 승리하고 그 땅을 기업으로 받았다(수 14장). 모세 역시 80세의 나이에 하나님께 부름을 받아 이스라엘을 이끄는 지도자가 되었다(출 3장). 늦게 피었지만 그들의 믿음은 더욱 크고 아름다웠다.
하나님의 교회는 남녀노소나 신분을 따지지 않는다. 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 일을 하는 사람이라면 누구나 그의 화원에서 피어나는 꽃이 될 수 있다. 중요한 것은 하나님께서 필요하실 때 기꺼이 쓰임 받는 삶이다.
사도 바울은 이렇게 고백하였다. “나의 간절한 기대와 소망을 따라 아무 일에든지 부끄러워하지 아니하고 지금도 전과 같이 온전히 담대하여 살든지 죽든지 내 몸에서 그리스도가 존귀하게 되게 하려 하나니 이는 내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라.” (빌립보서 1:20~21)
봄에 피든지 가을에 피든지 꽃은 모두 아름답다. 어린 때이든 노년의 때이든 하나님께 쓰임 받는 삶은 모두 귀하다. 그러므로 우리 모두 하나님의 화원에서 아름답게 피어나는 꽃들이 되자.
Beautifully Blooming Flowers
In early spring, there are trees that bloom even before their leaves appear. Forsythia, azaleas, and cherry blossoms are among them. Though there is still a chill in the air, these flowers are the first to announce the arrival of spring. In autumn, other flowers bloom beautifully—cosmos and chrysanthemums add their fragrance and color to the breeze. Though the seasons and timing of their blooming differ, every flower is beautiful whenever it blooms.
People whom God uses are like this. Some are used by God at a young age, while others are used in the later seasons of life. What matters is not when one blooms, but whether one blooms beautifully before God and is used by Him.
The Bible speaks of people who are like flowers blooming in early spring. David was still a young shepherd, yet he struck down Goliath, the Philistine champion, with a single stone (1 Samuel 17). The one who introduced the prophet of God to Naaman, the commander of the Aramean army, was an unnamed young girl (2 Kings 5). Jesus performed the miracle of feeding more than five thousand people with five loaves and two fish offered by a boy. When something is given with sincerity and devotion and placed in God’s hands, amazing works take place.
On the other hand, there are those who are like flowers that bloom in autumn. Caleb, at the age of 85, fought against the descendants of Anak in Hebron, conquered them, and received the land as his inheritance (Joshua 14). Moses, too, was called by God at the age of 80 to lead Israel (Exodus 3). Though they bloomed later, their faith was even greater and more beautiful.
God’s church does not discriminate by age, gender, or status. Anyone who does what pleases God can become a flower blooming in His garden. What matters is living a life that is willingly used by God when He calls.
The Apostle Paul confessed: “My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed in anything, but that with full courage, now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:20–21)
Whether blooming in spring or autumn, all flowers are beautiful. Whether in youth or old age, a life used by God is precious. Therefore, let us all become beautiful flowers blooming in God’s garden.
