가정과 교회, 그리고 나라의 역사를 살펴보면 언제나 공통점이 있다. 어둠 속에서도 빛을 발한 사람들이 존재했다는 사실이다. 그들은 권력이나 지위를 가진 사람들이 아니라 하나님 앞에서 묵묵히 순종하며 살아간 ‘거룩한 불씨’와 같은 사람들이었다. 하나님은 이미 은혜를 받은 사람들에게 “일어나라, 빛을 발하라”(사 60:1)고 말씀하신다. 받은 은혜는 간직만 하는 것이 아니라 세상 속에서 드러나기 위한 것이다.

하나님이 세우신 공동체는 언제나 이런 사람들을 통해 드러난다. 가정도, 교회도, 나라도 마찬가지다. 순종하는 한 사람이 있을 때 공동체는 다시 숨을 쉬기 시작한다. 하나님은 그렇게 빛을 발하는 사람을 통해 자신을 드러내신다.

성경은 이를 분명히 보여준다. 다니엘은 시기와 질투 속에서 사자굴에 던져질 위기에 처했지만, 끝까지 하나님께 기도했으며, 하나님은 그를 지키셨다. 이러한 삶은 전에 하던 대로 기도를 계속한 자들의 공통점이다(단 6:10). 하나님께 기도하는 삶은 결국 하나님께서 책임지신다는 사실을 보여주는 장면이다.

빛을 발하는 사람의 삶에는 특징이 있다. 그들은 어둠에 사로잡히지 않는다. 예수께서는 “나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니한다”(요 8:12)고 말씀하셨다. 그래서 그들의 삶에는 기쁨과 기도, 그리고 감사가 자연스럽게 흐른다(살전 5:16~18). 이런 삶은 하루아침에 만들어지지 않는다. 다니엘이 위기 속에서도 평소처럼 기도했던 것처럼, 일상의 신앙이 위기의 순간을 결정한다.

그러나 빛의 삶에는 언제나 희생이 따른다. 소금은 녹아 사라지며 맛을 내고, 양초는 자신을 태워 빛을 밝힌다. 빛은 언제나 자신을 내어주는 데서 시작된다.

에스더의 결단도 그렇다. 그는 “죽으면 죽으리라”는 각오로 금식하며 나아갔고, 그 선택은 민족을 살리는 현상으로 이어졌다. 하나님은 자신을 내어놓는 결단을 결코 외면하지 않으신다.

오늘 우리의 현실도 다르지 않다. 말로 은혜를 이야기하는 사람은 많지만, 사명의 십자가를 지고 살아가는 사람은 많지 않다. 그러나 하나님은 여전히 그런 한 사람을 찾고 계신다.

결국 중요한 것은 결과가 아니라 본질이다. 교회의 부흥이나 민족의 회복은 그 열매일 뿐이다. 지금 내가 서 있는 자리에서 먼저 빛으로 살아가는 것, 그것이 시작이다. 하나님이 찾으시는 사람은 바로 일어나 빛을 발한 사람들이다.

Those Who Rise and Shine

When we look at the history of families, the church, and nations, there is always something in common. Even in the midst of darkness, there have always been people who shone with light. They were not people of power or status, but those who quietly lived in obedience before God, like holy embers. God says to those who have already received His grace, “Rise and shine” Isaiah 60:1. The grace we have received is not meant to be kept, but to be revealed in the world.

The communities established by God are always revealed through such people. The same is true for families, churches, and nations. When even one person lives in obedience, the community begins to breathe again. God reveals Himself through those who shine.

The Bible clearly shows this. Daniel faced the threat of being thrown into the lions’ den because of jealousy and opposition, yet he continued to pray to God, and God protected him. This is a common characteristic of those who continue to pray as they always have Daniel 6:10. A life of prayer shows that God ultimately takes responsibility.

There are clear characteristics in the lives of those who shine. They are not overcome by darkness. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness” John 8:12. Therefore, their lives naturally overflow with joy, prayer, and gratitude 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18. This kind of life is not formed overnight. Just as Daniel prayed as usual even in a time of crisis, daily faith determines what happens in moments of crisis.

However, a life of light always involves sacrifice. Salt dissolves and disappears to give flavor, and a candle burns itself to give light. Light always begins with giving oneself.

Esther’s decision reflects this as well. With the resolve, “If I perish, I perish,” she fasted and stepped forward, and her choice led to the salvation of her people. God never turns away from the decision of those who offer themselves.

Our reality today is no different. Many people talk about grace, but not many live carrying the cross of their calling. Yet God is still searching for even one such person.

In the end, what matters is not the result but the essence. Revival of the church or restoration of a nation are only the fruits. The beginning is to live as light where I stand now. The person God is looking for is the one who rises and shines.
