최낙중 목사

미국 콜로라도주는 미국 서부에 위치한 산악 지대이다. 캐나다에서 시작된 로키산맥이 이어져 있으며, 해발 4천 미터 이상 되는 산이 무려 오십여 개나 된다. 부흥회 참석차 콜로라도주의 대도시 덴버에 갔다가 부흥회를 마치고 승용차를 타고 높은 산으로 오르던 중, 길가에 세워진 '팀버라인(Timber Line)'이라는 푯말을 보게 되었다. 현지인 목사님이 그 뜻을 설명해 주었는데, 여기가 바로 수목한계선(樹木限界線)이라고 했다.

이곳보다 더 높은 곳에는 어떤 나무도 살지 못한다고 했다. 저온, 강한 바람, 심한 일교차, 수분 부족으로 나무가 살 수 없다는 설명이었다. 그런데 그곳에는 백 년이 다 된 듯한 나무들이 살아 있었는데, 키는 1미터 50센티미터가 안 되어 보였다. 인고의 세월을 견디고 버텨 온 나무들이기에 단단하기가 쇳덩이 같다고 했으며, 이 나무들로 만든 바이올린이나 첼로 등 현악기의 소리는 너무나 아름답다고 했다. 그의 말을 듣는 순간, 예수님께서 우리에게 지라고 하신 사명의 십자가, 수치와 고난을 극복해낸 자들에게는 세상이 감당하지 못하는(히 11:38) 자들이 된다는 영감(inspiration)이 떠올랐다.

십자가가 없으면 영광도 없다. 오늘날 정상적인 목회자나 성도들은 수목한계선에서 자란 나무들과 같다. 그들에게서만 진실과 선함과 아름다운 언행심사가 나오며, 풍부에 처할 줄도 알고 빈궁에 처할 줄도 아는 적응력(빌 4:12~13)이 있다. 그들은 높은 자리에 있어도 교만하지 않으며, 낮은 자리에 있어도 열등의식이 없어 모든 것에서 자유롭다. ​우리 모두 수목한계선에서 자란 나무들처럼 날마다 나는 죽고 주님은 사시는 자가 되어, 십자가 외에는 자랑할 것이 없게 해야 한다.​ 그러면 주님께서 그의 부활 생명으로 살게 하시며, 이것이 죄와 사망의 법에서 해방되고 자유롭게 되는 영적 비밀이다. 그리하여 또 다른 자들을 자유롭게 해주시는 예수님처럼(눅 4:18~19) 살아 보자.

오늘부터 수목한계선에서 살아남은 나무가 되리라 다짐하며, 사도 바울이 "나의 자랑을 두고 단언하노니 나는 날마다 죽노라" (고전 15:31하)고 말했듯이, 죄악과 정욕에 매인 나는 날마다 십자가에 못 박고 자기를 비우시고 낮추시사 하나님의 뜻에 죽기까지 복종하신(빌 2:5~8) 예수님을 본받아야 한다. 내 마음을 비우고 낮추면 자존심 상할 것이 없고 늘 마음이 기쁘고 평안하다. 수심 이백 미터 아래는 파도가 없다고 하듯이, 이것이 바로 예수님의 마음을 닮은 자이고 그리스도를 닮은 자의 모습이다.

The Timberline

The state of Colorado, located in the western United States, is a mountainous region where the Rocky Mountains, stretching down from Canada, run through the land. There are more than fifty mountains that rise over 4,000 meters above sea level. While traveling to Denver, a major city in Colorado, to attend a revival meeting, I drove into the high mountains after the service. Along the roadside, I noticed a sign that read “Timber Line.” A local pastor explained that this marked the tree line—the highest elevation at which trees can survive.

Above this point, no trees can live due to low temperatures, strong winds, extreme temperature changes, and lack of moisture. Yet near the timberline, there were trees that appeared to be nearly a hundred years old, though they were less than one and a half meters tall. Having endured long years of hardship, these trees were said to be as hard as steel. Violins and cellos made from their wood produce exceptionally beautiful sounds. As I listened, I was struck with inspiration. I thought of the cross of mission that Jesus calls us to bear. Those who endure shame and suffering become people “of whom the world was not worthy” (Hebrews 11:38).

There is no glory without the cross. Faithful pastors and believers today are like trees grown at the timberline. From them flow truth, goodness, and beautiful words and deeds. They know how to live in abundance and how to live in need, having learned adaptability through Christ (Philippians 4:12–13). They are not arrogant when they are elevated, nor do they feel inferior when they are brought low. In all things, they are free. Let us all become like trees that grow at the timberline—dying daily to ourselves so that Christ may live in us, boasting in nothing except the cross. Then the Lord will cause us to live by His resurrection life. This is the spiritual secret of being freed from the law of sin and death. Let us live like Jesus, who sets others free (Luke 4:18–19).

From today, let us resolve to be trees that survive at the timberline. As the apostle Paul declared, “I die every day” (1 Corinthians 15:31), let us daily crucify our sinful nature and desires, and imitate Jesus, who emptied Himself, humbled Himself, and obeyed God’s will even unto death (Philippians 2:5–8). When we empty and humble our hearts, there is nothing left to wound our pride, and our hearts remain joyful and at peace. Just as there are no waves two hundred meters below the surface of the sea, this is the likeness of Christ—the one who truly resembles Jesus.
