존 워너 메이커가 위대한 인물로 성장한 것은 그의 신앙심과 실천한 투자 가치관 때문이다. 미국 제23대 대통령 벤저민 해리슨은 50세 된 메이커에게 체신부 장관직을 제안했는데, 그는 교회학교 교사 직분을 지키고자 처음엔 거절했다. 그러나 주일 사역을 계속할 수 있다는 약속을 받고 수락했다. 그는 60여 년간 교회학교 교사로 봉사했으며, 30세에 세계 최초로 백화점을 세워 ‘백화점의 왕’이라 불렸다. 84세 때 재산은 200억 달러가 넘었으나, “내 생애 최고의 투자는 열한 살 때 2달러 75센트에 산 성경책”이라고 고백했다. 그는 성경의 주인공 예수님 때문에 위대해졌으며(요 5:39), 성경은 하나님의 사람을 온전케 하고 하나님의 일을 온전케 한다(딤후 3:16-17).
우리 교회 김동환 집사님은 교회학교 부장 때 그동안 없었던 교회 버스를 한 대 사더니, 장로님이 된 후에는 첫 번째 성전 건축 시 자신의 집을 팔아서 건축 헌금으로 드리고 후에는 캄보디아 선교사로 파송을 받았다. 선교를 한참 하다가 선교관이 필요하다는 편지가 왔다. 그때 우리 교회는 그 선교관 건축비를 마련하기 위해 바자회를 실시하였다. 성도들이 그동안 아꼈던 물품을 내어놓았고, 거액의 선교관 건축비를 보내드렸다. 이러한 일들이 교회와 성도들이 할 수 있는 가장 완전한 투자이다. 주와 복음을 위한 일 외에는 그 어떤 것도 완전한 투자가 아니다. 우리 그리스도인들은 장사를 하든지 직장 생활을 하든 무엇을 하든지 하나님의 영광을 위해서 해야 한다(고전 10:31). 성령으로 거듭난 자는 마음에 불타는 소원이 있다. 그것은 내 몸에서 그리스도가 존귀하게 되는 일뿐이다. 이것이 가장 위대한 투자다.
우리 그리스도인들은 하나님의 소유이다(롬 14:8). 우리는 시간과 재물과 생명을 맡은 청지기일 뿐이다. 그러므로 청지기에게 구할 것은 충성뿐이다(고전 4:2). 교회의 가장 완전한 투자는 전도와 양육, 이 두 날개로 더 높이 날아오르는 것이다(사 40:29-31). 이런 일은 성령의 감동을 받은 자만 가능하다. 성전 건축도(슥 4:6, 학 1:14), 전도도(행 18) 성령께서 하신다. 성령은 사모하는 자들에게 임하시고(시 107:9), 죄를 회개한 자들에게 임하시며(행 2:37-39), 밤낮 기도하는 자들에게 임하신다(눅 11:13). 그러므로 교회의 기도회에 힘써야 한다. 쉬지 않고 기도하는 자들에게는 하나님의 응답이 있고, 그들은 항상 기뻐하며 감사하여 하나님의 뜻을 이룬다(살전 5:16-18).
The Greatest Investment
John Wanamaker became a great man because of his faith and the investment values he practiced. When U.S. President Benjamin Harrison offered the 50-year-old Wanamaker the position of Postmaster General, he initially declined because he wanted to keep his role as a Sunday school teacher. He accepted the position only after receiving a promise that he could continue his Sunday ministry. He served as a Sunday school teacher for more than sixty years. At the age of thirty, he established the world’s first department store and came to be known as the “King of Department Stores.” By the age of eighty-four, his wealth exceeded twenty billion dollars, yet he confessed, “The greatest investment of my life was the Bible I bought at the age of eleven for two dollars and seventy-five cents.” He became great because of Jesus Christ, the central figure of the Bible (John 5:39), and the Scriptures make the servant of God complete and fully equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
In our church, Deacon Kim Dong-hwan purchased the church’s first bus during his time as head of the Sunday school. After later becoming an elder, he sold his own house to give the proceeds as an offering for the construction of the first church sanctuary. Later, he was sent out as a missionary to Cambodia. After many years of mission work, a letter arrived saying that a mission center was needed. At that time, our church held a bazaar to raise funds for its construction. The congregation brought out items they had carefully saved, and a large sum was sent to support the building of the mission center. These are the most perfect investments a church and its members can make. Apart from work done for the Lord and the gospel, no investment is truly complete.
Whether we engage in business or work in the marketplace, whatever we do, we must do it for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Those who are born again by the Holy Spirit have a burning desire in their hearts: that Christ may be honored in their bodies. This is the greatest investment of all.
We Christians belong to God (Romans 14:8). We are merely stewards entrusted with time, possessions, and life itself. What is required of stewards is faithfulness (1 Corinthians 4:2). The church’s most complete investment is to soar higher on two wings: evangelism and discipleship (Isaiah 40:29–31). Such work is possible only for those moved by the Holy Spirit. Church construction (Zechariah 4:6; Haggai 1:14) and evangelism (Acts 18) are both accomplished by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes upon those who earnestly desire Him (Psalm 107:9), those who repent of their sins (Acts 2:37–39), and those who pray day and night (Luke 11:13). Therefore, we must devote ourselves to the church’s prayer meetings. Those who pray without ceasing receive God’s answers, rejoice always, give thanks in all circumstances, and fulfill the will of God (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).
