Part 3 The More You Erase The More Grace Renewed

Episode 19 Founded Church Starting with A Tent

At first, it seemed like a few people were missing because it was a big national holiday, Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving with the full moon in the fall), but all eight church members obeyed the young pastor’s words and showed up at church at 10 am the next day.”

“There is a church in Bongcheon-dong without a pastor. Would you like to go there?’ The dean of the seminary suggested it to me. At that time, I was a senior in the seminary and was looking for a ministry opportunity right away, so I had no reason to hesitate.

“I will do my best,” I said.

That day was Sunday, June 22nd, the longest day of the year. I went to 158 Bongcheon-dong. I saw a shabby sign saying ‘Young Sang Church.’  As I entered the church tent, the sun heated me up and the air inside the church was literally like a hot steam room. The tent, which was about 350 sq ft in size, was old and had many holes here and there, so the sky was visible through the holes. Three young men were teaching children at the Sunday school.

“Preacher, thank you for coming.

At the time, Bongcheon-dong was a small neighborhood where Cheonggyecheon evictees lived. A year ago, a pastor started a pioneering mission at this church, but it was so difficult that he quit and went somewhere else. Sheep without a shepherd were completely like orphans who had lost their parents.

“I will do my best. “Please pray for me.”

After greeting the church members, we started repairing various parts of the church. The space at the very back of the tent, next to the shoe rack, was blocked with veneer plywood to create a prayer room and study. We prayed and evangelized hard to revive the abandoned church. I lit the light and prayed every morning, went around the neighborhood during the day to share the gospel, and stayed up at night praying and clinging to God.

Two months have passed. The number of church members increased to eight. I evangelized to a married 22-year-old couple with the same age and a senior woman. It was a double growth. Church members were even more enthusiastic and encouraged one another.

In early August of that year, the land owner suddenly appeared.

“Who gave you permission to pitch a tent on someone else’s land? We are planning to build our house here, so please voluntarily demolish it within a month. If it is not demolished we will mobilize the district office demolition team and forcibly demolish it.”

The landowner spoke firmly and returned.

None of the eight church members was financially stable nor capable. The husband of a young couple of the same age living with two sensors worked as a mason for living. Two senior women over 60 years old were in-laws and were attending church together. One suffered from severe arthritis and the other suffered from hemorrhoids.

Another church member, a young man suffered from a herniated disc for several years and was unable to find a job. Additionally, one of the two church sisters worked at the Samyang Ramen Factory and the other was a city bus conductor. I was in a position to help them all first if I had money.

I fasted and prayed all night. I had no choice but to cling to God. A month passed like that. The land owner came back. He looked very angry.

“I can't wait any longer. I'll give you two more weeks, so please remove it quickly. I hope there is no bigger disaster.”

After the Sunday service on September 26th, I asked eight church members to join in a special prayer over this issue.

“Tomorrow is the Chuseok holiday (Korean Thanksgiving with the full moon), but since the place of worship is about to be demolished, let’s all go up to Mt. Gwanak and pray to the Lord all night. Please come to church tomorrow evening at 10pm."

Because it was a big national holiday, I thought that a few people would miss out, but all eight church members obeyed the young pastor's words and came to church.

Because it was Chuseok, the moon was bright and shining. People were excited and happy about the holiday, but we didn't have time to enjoy it. This was because the house of God was in danger of being torn down. I went up the mountain, supporting the two seniors. If I were to walk, it would have taken me only 30 minutes, but we arrived in two hours. My eyes were filled with tears as I looked at the poor, sick, and struggling church members. Moreover, it broke my heart to think of the church that needs to be demolished immediately.

‘Lord, please have pity on us. ‘Please guide our path.’

We cried and prayed at the top of our lungs that night. All eight church members prayed on a large rock on a high mountain, wet with night dew and mixed with sweat and tears. As dawn broke, the church members who had been praying scattered throughout the night gathered in one place. Everyone seemed to be filled with the Holy Spirit. We had a firm resolve in our hearts to dedicate our bodies and minds to the Lord.

‘Even if I cross a big mountain and go through the valley

If I walk in the light, the word that the Lord promised to always keep will not change.

The glory of heaven, the glory of heaven,

It fills my heart

Sing Hallelujah loudly

I will praise you forever’

We sang a hymn that someone had started, repeating it several times. One senior woman called ‘the heavenly glory’’ (Young Gwang) "the old heavenly husband”’ (Young Gam). This senior member who did not know how to read did not understand the meaning of ‘glory.’ She may have called it ‘Heavenly husband’ while thinking of her old husband who passed away.

‘God, please listen to her graciously. Now, she sings "glory" in the hymn as an old husband, but in reality, it means an honor.’ I let God know how she would feel in her heart.

The Lord did something amazing that day. One of the two senior members, who had crawled for two hours to climb the mountain due to hemorrhoids and arthritis, was so happy that she continued to sing hymns while jumping here and there. Just a few hours ago, it was a woman who had been helped because of severe arthritis.

“Ma’am, hold on to me.”

“It’s strange, Pastor, my legs don’t hurt at all any more. Earlier, when you laid your hands on my head and prayed, my heart felt joyful and peaceful, and my whole body felt hot like fire. I was also speaking in tongues. After that, my sore knees felt better. “The pain is gone.”

We experienced an amazing miracle, the power of God’s healing.

The following Sunday, a bankbook and a seal were placed on the podium. It was put up by a young couple living with seniors  who had been healed. In the bank account, it had 78,000 won ($78) that they had saved frugally. At the time, it was a lot of money to rent two rooms with this amount of money. The money was offered to God for the relocation of the place of worship.

A church sister who works at a ramen factory and another  sister who conducts a bus each gave everything they had saved to God. All I had was a wristwatch, so the next day I sold it at a watch shop for 2,500 won ($2.5) and offered it to God. Like the two small coins given by the poor widow, the donations made by eight church members with sincerity totaled 165,000 won ($165). We paid for 8 pyeong (284.6654 sq ft) with that money.

The chapel was relocated with a lease of 150,000 won ($150).

It was the only two-story house among the small houses at 158 Bongcheon-dong. On the first floor, Elder Park Hyo Seok, who became the chairman of Handok Cosmetics and serves Yoido Full Gospel Church later, was running a pharmacy with a sign saying Handok Pharmacy.

After paying the deposit, we used the remaining 15,000 won ($15) to decorate the church by hanging curtains and buying cushions, making it into a wonderful chapel.

“Preacher, the church is so pretty.”

That summer, we were extremely happy and happy to be free from the tent church where we had to battle the scorching heat and the rainy season that never seemed to stop. The winter that year when we moved here from the tent church was very cold. However, those of us who moved to a sturdy worship space were able to stay the winter warmly. Late at night during Christmas cantata practice, the hot cross buns brought by a  sister who worked as a conductor warmed our hearts.
