대나무의 숲
대나무의 숲은 교회와 같아야 한다. 대나무는 숲을 이루어 자라며, 그리스도인 한 사람 한 사람은 대나무처럼 하나님의 뜻에 따라 지조와 절개를 지키는 존재가 되어야 한다. 대나무가 지조의 상징이듯, 그리스도인은 하나님의 거룩함을 나타내야 한다.
그리스도인은 두 가지 의미를 지닌다. 하나는 그리스도께 속한 자이고, 다른 하나는 그리스도를 닮은 자다. 예수 그리스도는 거룩하신 하나님의 아들이며, 그를 영접한 자는 하나님의 자녀가 된다(롬 8:15). 하나님의 본질은 거룩함이며, 이는 순수함과 깨끗함을 뜻한다. 예수님을 영접하는 것은 접붙임과 같아, 예수님을 닮아가는 과정을 통해 우리는 성도가 된다.
성도는 세속에 물들지 않고 거룩한 무리로 살아가는 자들이다. 대나무처럼 하나님에 대한 지조와 절개를 지키며, 이러한 이들이 모여 교회를 이룬다. 교회는 견고하고 아름다운 대나무 숲과 같이 되어야 하며, 하나님의 말씀을 굳게 붙드는 자에게 평강이 임한다(사 26:3).
삼손은 들릴라에게 속아 두 눈을 잃었고, 아간은 탐욕으로 멸망했으며, 사울은 명예의 유혹으로 다윗을 미워하다가 망했다. 이들은 화려한 단풍나무 같았으나 결국 쇠락했다.
반면 참된 성도는 예수님을 본받아야 한다(히 12:2~4).
예수님은 자신을 낮추고 섬김의 본을 보이셨으며, 끝까지 사랑하셨다(요 13:1).
예수님이 주시는 생명은 풍성하고 영원하다(요 10:10). 제2차 세계대전 당시 히로시마 원폭에도 대나무는 살아남았다. 이처럼 예수님의 생명을 가진 자는 어떤 고난에도 영원히 산다. 대나무가 곧게 자라는 비결은 속을 비우고 수많은 마디를 지녔기 때문이다. 예수님도 자신을 비우셨다(빌 2:5~8). 그를 본받는 자들이 진정한 그리스도인이다.
이들이 모인 곳이 교회다. 대나무처럼 서로를 존중하며 하나의 공동체로 연합해야 한다. 삼겹줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 않듯, 예수의 교회는 영영 왕성하게 된다.
대나무는 4, 5월에 죽순을 통해 생육과 번성을 이룬다. 죽순은 몸의 노폐물을 배출하고 건강을 돕는다. 이와 같이 교회의 직분자들도 교회에 유익을 끼치며 섬김의 지도력(servant ledership)을 발휘해야 한다.
또한, 대나무의 뿌리는 하나로 엉켜 있다. 교회는 주님의 몸이며(엡 1:23), 각 지체는 역할이 다르지만 하나로 연결되어 조화를 이룬다. 서로의 존재감을 귀하게 인정하며, 대나무 숲처럼 하나 되어 주님께 택함 받은 교회를 이루자.
A Bamboo Forest
A bamboo forest should resemble the church. Bamboo grows together as a forest, and each individual Christian, like bamboo, must live with integrity and steadfastness according to the will of God. Just as bamboo symbolizes fidelity, Christians are called to reflect the holiness of God.
The word Christian carries two meanings: one who belongs to Christ, and one who resembles Christ. Jesus Christ is the holy Son of God, and those who receive Him become children of God (Romans 8:15). God’s very nature is holiness, which means purity and cleanness. Receiving Jesus is like being grafted in; through the process of becoming like Him, we are transformed into saints.
Saints are those who live as a holy people, untainted by the world. Like bamboo, they preserve integrity and faithfulness to God. When such people gather, they form the church. The church should be strong and beautiful like a bamboo forest, and those who firmly hold on to God’s Word are granted perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3).
Samson lost his eyesight after being deceived by Delilah; Achan perished because of greed; Saul fell because he yielded to the temptation of fame and grew envious of David. Though they appeared splendid like colorful maple trees, they ultimately withered away. In contrast, true saints must fix their eyes on Jesus and follow His example (Hebrews 12:2–4).
Jesus humbled Himself, showed the example of servanthood, and loved to the very end (John 13:1). The life Jesus gives is abundant and eternal (John 10:10). During World War II, even the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima did not destroy bamboo. Likewise, those who possess the life of Jesus live eternally. Bamboo grows straight because it is hollow inside and has many joints. In the same way, Jesus emptied Himself (Philippians 2:5–8). Those who imitate Him are true Christians.
The place where such people gather is the church. Like bamboo, believers must respect one another and unite as one community. Just as a cord of three strands is not easily broken, the church of Jesus will flourish forever.
Bamboo grows and multiplies through new shoots in April and May. Bamboo shoots help cleanse the body of toxins and promote health. In the same way, church leaders and officeholders must bring benefit to the church and demonstrate servant leadership.
Furthermore, the roots of bamboo are intertwined as one. The church is the body of the Lord (Ephesians 1:23). Although each member has a different role, all are connected as one and live in harmony. Let us value one another and, like a bamboo forest, become a church united as one chosen by the Lord.
