영적 멘토
2025년 1월 20일은 미국 대통령의 취임식이다. 이번에 트럼프가 대통령에 당선된 데는 기독교 보수단체의 적극적인 도움이 있었다. 그 배후에는 트럼프의 영적인 멘토인 폴라 화이트 목사가 있다. 트럼프가 그를 영적 멘토를 삼은 동기가 있다.
트럼프는 20여 년 전 폴라 화이트 목사가 TV 방송을 했을 때에 그의 설교에 은혜를 받고 그를 만났다. 트럼프가 “무엇을 원하느냐”고 하자 “나는 당신의 영혼 필요하다(I need your soul)”고 답해 트럼프를 크게 감동시킨 것이다. 그 후부터 지금까지 트럼프 가족 예배를 인도하고 있다.
그는 기독교 보수주의가 외치고 있는 낙태 반대, 동성애 반대를 하게 한 것이다. 이전의 미국 대통령 오바마가 성탄 인사를 “해피 홀리데이(Happy Holiday)”로 변질시켜 놓은 것을 이제는 다시 “메리 크리스마스(Merry Chrismas)”로 바꾸어놓으라고 권했고 “그렇게 하겠다”고 약속한 상태다. 이처럼 세계적인 지도자가 하나님의 종을 신뢰하고 영적 지도를 받아들이는 일은 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 일이다.
우리도 모두 영적인 멘토가 필요하다. 예수 그리스도께서 성경을 통해, 그리고 주의 종들을 통해 그 일을 하시고 계신다. 이런 영적 멘토를 받아들인 자가 의의 병기 평화의 도구가 된다. 속도보다 우선이 방향이다. 올 한해 뿐 아니라 평생토록 영적 멘토의 지도를 받자. 삶의 지혜를 얻는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다(잠 4:7). 오직 주의 말씀만이 우리 길에 등이요 빛이시다.
Spiritual Mentor
January 20, 2025, is the inauguration day of the President of the United States. Donald Trump’s election as president was made possible in part by the active support of conservative Christian groups. Behind this support stands Pastor Paula White, who is known as Trump’s spiritual mentor. There is a clear reason why Trump chose her as such.
More than twenty years ago, Trump watched Pastor Paula White preaching on television and was deeply moved by her message. He later met her in person. When Trump asked, “What do you want?” she replied, “I need your soul.” This response deeply impressed him. <From that time until now, she has led worship services for the Trump family.>
Pastor Paula White influenced Trump to embrace positions emphasized by Christian conservatism, such as opposition to abortion and opposition to homosexuality. She also encouraged him to restore the traditional Christmas greeting “Merry Christmas,” which had been replaced with “Happy Holidays” during the previous Obama administration. Trump promised to do so. When a global leader places trust in God’s servant and accepts spiritual guidance, it is something that pleases God.
All of us also need a spiritual mentor. Jesus Christ guides us through the Scriptures and through His servants. Those who accept spiritual mentoring become instruments of righteousness and tools of peace. Direction is more important than speed. Not only for this year, but throughout our entire lives, we should receive the guidance of a spiritual mentor. Gaining wisdom for life is more important than anything else (Proverbs 4:7). Only the Word of the Lord is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV)
