Part 2 Unerasable Blessing

Episode 16 The Only Hope of this world is the Gospel

See the world through God's eyes. Then you may see the ripened grain waiting for the farmer's scythe to reap. You can hear the cry of those who long for salvation.

My first son was born. We named him Young Chan, which means ‘May the light of God’s glory last forever! in life.’

Above all, the most precious and glorious work is to save people who have been corrupted by sin through the gospel. I hope that my oldest son follows the path to be a pastor from generation to generation.

Whenever we had family worship at home, if I say, “Young Chan, please become a pastor when you grow up,” Young Chan at the age of three answered “Yes!” loudly.

Young Chan became an elementary school student. When his teacher asked about his future hope, he answered “pastor.” Same as when he was a middle school student. However, when he entered high school, his heart began to sway. Suddenly, his dream changed from being a pastor to a teacher.

Childhood is the period of dependence and a vertical relationship with parents. However, during puberty, they want more independence and often shift from vertical relationships with parents to horizontal relationships, friendships and social interactions. They prefer to be with friends rather than parents. They keep secrets from their parents, but there are no secrets between friends. Also, as it is a transitional period from dependence to self-reliance, adolescence is also a time of alienation and conflict. They worry a lot about their uncertain identity and become sensitive. However, my son who was born as a pastor's son and unable to fully express his thoughts and emotions  as growing up. He was often nervous under social pressure in a tense atmosphere and could not be free from the force. So he might not like to become a pastor.

I understood his situation, but as a parent, I could not give up my desire for my son to become a pastor who is dedicated to God’s ministry, saving and healing the souls, which is the most valuable thing in this world.

So is my wife's prayer. We can't force it. God is the One who has to do it.

Young Chan majored in English literature at Chung-Ang University. There were foreign students at Asia United Theological University and Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary. They attended my church where my son naturally hung out with them and easily  developed his English skills.

In November 1997, South Korea faced a currency-cum-banking crisis and requested for official assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Companies in South Korea drastically lowered the number of hiring new employees. As a result, the number of young people unemployed increased. Honorary retirees and early retirees occur continuously one after another. One day when they went to work, their work desks were gone. It turned out that they had already been fired without any advance notice. Because of such an absurd laid off, the word “Absurd Retirement” came into being. To find a job in this economic collapse is very difficult like asking for the moon.

Young Chan graduated from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, South Korea in February 1998. My son applied for a job everywhere, but thankfully he got a job at the Gangnam branch of Commercial Bank in Seoul. SInce he got a job, I gradually started to look for time for him to get married. At a church staff meeting, I asked the associate pastors to find a perfect match for my son Young Chan if there was a godly person. Immediately so Evangelist K, who commutes from Incheon to Seoul to work at my church (17 miles), raised her hand and offered to match my son, saying that there was a godly sister.

At first, I didn't know who it was, but later I found out that it was Hye Jin Baek, the daughter of the associate pastor K.Young Chan and Hye Jin met for the first time at a coffee shop in the Lotte Hotel in Jamsil, and then went on two or three dates. Meanwhile, Young Chan fell in love with this lady. One day, Hye Jin asked what his dream for the future was.

“Young Chan, what is your dream?”

"Now that I am a bank clerk, I will be promoted and become a branch manager when the time comes.

“Oh not that kind of dream, but a dream for the church and the gospel?”

“Yes, I would like to become an elder and assist the pastor very well.”

Suddenly, Hye Jin couldn't hide their disappointment and said with a serious expression.

“Then you shouldn’t marry someone like me. I met Jesus when I was in the 4th grade of elementary school. I have a vow that I have not given up and continued to pray for without ceasing. It is to become the wife of a pastor.”

Young Chan was in shock. He couldn't sleep all night, tossed and turned until the morning. When he went to work, he couldn't get his hands on work. Young Chan had no appetite and thought. He couldn't afford to spend more time like this, so he calle
d Hye Jin.

“Would you mind meeting with me just once? I have something to say.”

When they met at a coffee store, Young Chan suddenly asked.

“Do all of Christians have different gifts from God?”

"Yes. Yes."

“Then, if everyone becomes a pastor, who would be elders? The job positions are different, but all Christians’ duty is the same in serving God and sharing the gospel.”

My son insisted on persuading Hye Jin.
"Yes, that's right. But for me, because I made a promise to God, I cannot marry someone who does not want to be a pastor.”

Hye Jin also clearly conveyed her will without backing down.Young Chan came to realize that he could not convince Hye Jin's heart.

One morning, Young Chan came to me
with steely determination.

“Father, I will go to the fasting prayer center for a week. I requested a week off from work.

A week later, Young Chan stopped by his work on the way down after fasting and praying and handed in a resignation letter. He stopped by my office and knelt down in front of me. He spoke to me more solemnly than before.

“Father, I have decided to go to seminary.

“What are you talking about all of a sudden?”

“I've been thinking about it a lot. At the fasting prayer center, I was convinced in my heart that I will dedicate my life to share the gospel.
I said, “Isn’t it that you have decided to go to a seminary not because you really wanted but because of the girl?

Young Chan said, "No, sir. My decision has nothing to do with her. I will follow in my father's footsteps and become a pastor.”

That's how he got out of the bank clerk position that was difficult to get in. I visited the dean of the seminary of my denomination and consulted with him about my son's career path. Young Chan received a recommendation letter from Dr. Jang Sang-Seon.
My son entered the Master of Divinity and Theology program at Talbot Theological Seminary at Biola University in  La Mirada, CA.

I thought that I should get to meet Hye Jin, who promised to marry my son. At first glance, she seemed nice and trustworthy. I had them sit down and we planned their wedding in earnest.

I said, “Let’s invite a pastor you have always respected the most as the wedding officiator.”

Three days later, my son and future daughter-in-law came to me and knelt before me.

“We found the most suitable pastor to be our wedding officiator. We decided to ask the pastor to officiate the wedding.”

“Who is that pastor?

Said the son. “It is my father.”

I was surprised by the unexpected request. I was moved to see the tears welling up in the eyes of my son and prospective daughter-in-law.

“Dad, please officiate our wedding. I respect you the most and love you.”

Tears of unspeakable joy welled up in my eyes. The whole family wanted to play part in the celebration of my first son's wedding. My daughter, Da Jeong, decided to write a song.

“Dad, I will compose a song for my older brother's wedding.”

Then Jin Soo, is a good singer, said. “I will sing a song at the wedding.”

All the guests were moved and praised the Lord at the wedding where the father was officiating and the younger brother was singing a song โ€‹โ€‹that his sister composed. God answered my 27 years of prayer through my daughter-in-law.

My oldest son, Young Chan gave birth to a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Grace, while studying in the United States. Their Korean names are Eun-Chong and Eun-Song.

After Young Chan was ordained as a pastor and received his doctoral degree, he returned to South Korea. He became a professor in the Department of Christian Studies at Baekseok University.
Through my son's life, I can tell confidently that the gospel is the only hope. What changes people is not knowledge, but the love of Christ and the gospel of the cross.

When finding the most truly valuable thing, people can put other things down. Pos
itions like professors, pastors, or money, talent, health, and riches are not an end, but are simply means to save souls through the gospel.

To follow means without purpose is depravity. If the purpose is clear, even hardships can be endured with joy. All means are methods to achieve an end.

I had a wish for my second son, Jin Soo, to be a pastor. Jin Soo, who majored in business administration at Yonsei University, prepares for the patent  attorney exam.

“Jin Soo! Why do you want to become a patent attorney?”

Jin Soo replied. “Father, I can make a lot of money as a patent attorney;

“What are you going to do with the money?” “I would like to help my brother in his pastoral ministry and also support missionary work.”

“I think differently. I see that you have a good personality, sing well, love reading, and have leadership skills. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for a person with many gifts to become a pastor and evangelize many people? I would like you to serve as a pastor too.” I tried to convince him all night on Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day).

Likewise, Jin Soo liked a girl, Kim Mi-Ae, who majored in nursing at the same school, Yonsei University. Mi-Ae seemed very trustworthy. When Jin Soo returned to university after serving in the military, he was a senior. At a floral shop near Yonsei University, he bought a rose for this lady almost everyday to the extent that the owner of the floral shop remembered my son.

Seeing that, I thought that if he had that kind of persistence, he would have the qualities of a pastor. In the end, my second son, Jin Soo, did not ignore my suggestion and gave up the patent attorney exam to become a pastor.

The second son also got married and studied Master of Divinity (M.Div.) at Baekseok University Christian Theological Seminary. After having two daughters, Yerim (Emma) and Yena, and got ordained as a minister, he went to study abroad to learn more. He pursued a Doctor of Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary after completing his Master of Theology (Th.M) at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, USA.

God called me to be a servant of the Lord out of a dysfunctional family and spiritual darkness. However, my two sons grew up in faith from their mother's womb and were raised in a family of faith. When I think of my two sons, I am excited and looking forward to seeing how God is going to use them.

It is important for servants of the Lord to know what true values are, not ancestry or earthly things. One human soul is more precious than the world. After the fall of Adam, the only way to save the lost is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the redemption of the cross. Anyone who believes in the gospel will be saved.

Faith comes by hearing. People cannot hear without someone preaching to t
hem. It is very important who preaches and how to preach. Those who receive Jesus Christ as Lord in their heart are qualified to preach the gospel. It is important who preaches the gospel. You must be a Christian.

Christian has two meanings. One means to belong to Christ, and the other means to be like Christ. Those who are in Christ do what Christ did. Because Christ is in them, teaching the secrets of the kingdom, preaching the gospel, and healing the sick. So it shows that  the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

I have been praying for my whole family to devote themselves to the salvation of precious souls. My younger sister, Woo Soon, also met and married a young man of good faith. My brother-in-law, Pastor Nak-gyu Choi, is currently in charge of the Hangang Church. My younger sister ‘Yong Soon’ also majored in early childhood education and married a faithful young man, who also studied theology and became a lead pastor at Gunpo New Life Church as Rev. Park Young Guk.

My brother-in-law, Rev. Yoo Jae-Myung, the pastor of Ansan Bitna Church, was an exemplary young man at Haeoreum Church. From the day at the seminary until he became a pastor and planted a church in Ansan City, he had blood, sweat, and tears daily.

Pastor Yoo Jae-Myung also m
arried a sister who was kind-hearted and a prayer warrior at my church. She is now the leader of the evangelism task force at their current church.

In addition, missionary Kim Dong Hwan, who was sent as a missionary to Cambodia, was a model elder at Haeoreum Church.

Those who are well-pleasing in the eyes of God receive the Holy Spirit and know that preaching the gospel is the highest value in life. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for the world.

See the world through God's eyes. Then you may see the ripened grain waiting for the farmer's scythe to reap. You can hear the cry of those who long for salvation.
It is the gospel of Christ that brings light to the world. The basis of building a healthy family and society is the gospel. The gospel is the grace of redemption by Jesus Christ to solve the problems of all our lives and the resurrection life of Christ who overcame death.

One day, I asked my eldest grandson, Eun Chong (Samuel), who was in elementary school, what he hopes for the future. To this question, Eun Chong answered, “I want to be a pastor like my grandfather and my dad.”

I hope that all of our family members will be used as servants of the Lord who work for the gospel that saves the world.
