A Life That Opens the Eyes of the Heart

It can be said that human beings have three kinds of eyes.

The first is the physical eye, which everyone possesses. First is the physical eye that all people have. We see the world and perceive objects. The second is the eye that perceives principles, called the eye of reasonthe eye of reason. It is the eye that discovers the principles and order of all things in the universe through science and inquiry. Through science and inquiry, this eye discovers the order and laws of the universe. With this eye, humans have come to understand the laws of nature and have advanced civilization.

However, these two kinds of eyes alone are not enough to fully understand the essence of life. That is why a third eye is needed, the spiritual eye. The spiritual eye is the eye of the heart; it sees invisible values and discerns the will of God through faith.

Fanny Crosby, who was visually impaired, was able to write countless hymns because her spiritual eyes were open, not her physical ones. Likewise, Thomas Edison, known as a great inventor, is said to have continued his work with a heart that relied on God alongside his relentless efforts. Behind such great achievements lies the ability to see what is unseen.

The same is true of figures in the Bible. David did not see the giant Goliath as an object of fear, but as one who must be defeated before God. Elisha’s servant Gehazi was initially afraid when surrounded by enemy forces, but when his spiritual eyes were opened, he saw God’s army protecting them and found peace. The same situation can appear entirely different depending on which eyes we use to see it.

The same applies to us today. Problems and difficulties exist for everyone. But people of faith look beyond the situation and see God. Recognizing that the One within us is greater than any problem in the world is the beginning of spiritual sight.

Jesus saw the Samaritans who were despised by others at the time as a harvest to be gathered. He viewed people and the world not through human eyes, but through God’s perspective. Shouldn’t we also have the same kind of eyes?

Spiritual eyes do not open automatically. They open gradually through self-reflection, repentance, and holding firmly to God’s Word. As the heart becomes pure, spiritual vision becomes clearer. Ultimately, the eye of the heart, the eye of faith, is the perspective of seeing oneself, others, and the world from God’s point of view. While physical eyes show us reality and rational eyes explain principles, spiritual eyes illuminate the meaning and direction of life.

It is up to us what kind of eyes we want to see the world with—whether we remain focused only on what is visible or move toward what is unseen. What we need today is not more information, but the spiritual eyes to see from God’s perspective.
