새롭게 변화된 사람들
천국에 대한 다른 이름 중 하나는 새 하늘과 새 땅이다(계 21:1). 그곳은 죄인이었으나 예수 그리스도의 대속의 피로 죄사함을 받고 의인으로 거듭난 새 사람들만 모인 곳이다.
그들은 “그때의 의인들은 자기 아버지 나라에서 해와 같이 빛나리라”(마 13:43) 하신 말씀처럼 해같이 빛나는 자들이다.
어두운 곳에 밝은 빛이 들어오면 어둠이 사라지듯, 생명의 빛이신 예수 그리스도를 마음에 모신 자는 그리스도 안에서 거듭난 새로운 피조물이다(고후 5:17).
예수께서 처음 행하신 표적은 갈릴리 가나의 혼인집에서 물을 포도주로 바꾸신 사건이다. 그때 귀히 쓰임받은 자들은 잔치집의 하인들이었다. 표적을 행하신 분은 예수님이시지만, 그 일을 위해 하인들을 들어 쓰신 것이다. 연회장은 더 좋은 포도주가 어디서 났는지 알지 못했지만, 빈 항아리에 물을 채우라는 말씀과 그것을 떠서 가져가라는 말씀에 순종한 하인들은 알았다(요 2:9).
기독교는 체험의 종교이다. 기도하고 응답을 받아본 자만이 “기도하면 응답된다”는 확신에 찬 목소리를 낼 수 있다. 주님의 은혜로 난치병을 고침받은 자는 “여호와는 치료자이시다”(출 15:26)라고 담대히 고백할 수 있다.
앎에는 이론으로 아는 지식이 있고, 체험을 통해 얻는 산지식이 있다. 호세아 선지자가 “내 백성이 지식이 없어 망한다”(호 4:6)고 말했을 때의 ‘지식’은 단순한 정보가 아니라 경험을 뜻한다. 히브리어 원어로는 야다(יָדַע)이며, ‘직접 경험하여 알다’는 의미이다. 그래서 호세아는 “우리가 여호와를 알자, 힘써 여호와를 알자”(호 6:3)라고 외쳤다.
예수와 함께하는 삶의 증거는 심령의 새로워짐이다. 겉사람은 낡아지나 속사람은 날마다 새로워진다(고후 4:16). 그 새로워짐은 마음과 생각을 밝히고, 복음을 위해 담대하고 적극적인 삶을 살게 한다. “온전한 사랑이 두려움을 내쫓느니라”(요일 4:18) 하신 말씀처럼, 주님을 온전히 사랑하는 자는 두려움이 없다.
예수로 말미암아 새롭게 변화된 자들은 거룩한 불씨가 된다. 그들은 자신의 삶의 의미와 가치를 오직 주와 복음에 두며, 주님을 자신의 소유주로 알고, 자신은 주인의 하인임을 고백한다. 예만 하시고 아니오가 없으신 예수 그리스도를 닮기 위해 온 힘을 다해 순종하며 살아간다.
모든 그리스도인은 주님의 명령에 끝까지 순종하는 잔치집 하인들이 되어야 한다. 목사도 목동 다윗처럼 사자의 입에서도 양을 지켜낸 마음으로 사역해야 한다(삼상 17:34~36).
People Who Are Made New
Another name for heaven is the “new heaven and new earth” (Revelation 21:1). It is a place where only those who were sinners but have received forgiveness through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ and have become righteous are gathered. As Jesus said, “Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matthew 13:43), they shine brightly like the sun.
Just as light entering a dark place drives away the darkness, those who receive the light of life, Jesus Christ, in their hearts become a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
The first miracle Jesus performed was at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, turning water into wine. The ones who were used in that miracle were the servants at the banquet. Jesus performed the miracle, but He used the servants to carry out His work. The guests did not know where the better wine came from, but the servants understood because they obeyed His instructions to fill the empty jars with water and carry it to the master of the feast (John 2:9).
Christianity is a religion of experience. Only those who have prayed and seen answers can confidently declare, “Prayer brings results.” Those who have been healed through the grace of the Lord can boldly proclaim, “The Lord is my healer” (Exodus 15:26).
There are two kinds of knowledge: theoretical knowledge and experiential, living knowledge. When the prophet Hosea said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6), the word “knowledge” refers not to information, but to experiential understanding. The Hebrew word yada (יָדַע) means “to know through experience.” That is why Hosea urges, “Let us know the Lord; let us press on to know Him” (Hosea 6:3).
The evidence of a life walking with Jesus is a renewed inner being. The outward person may age and fade, but the inner person is renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). This renewal enlightens the mind, strengthens the heart, and enables a bold, active life for the gospel. As 1 John 4:18 says, “Perfect love casts out fear.” Those who fully love the Lord have no fear.
Those made new by Jesus become holy sparks. They place the meaning and value of their lives solely in the Lord and the gospel, recognizing Jesus Christ as their Master and themselves as His servants. They strive with all their strength to obey and imitate Jesus Christ completely.
Every Christian must be like the servants at the wedding feast, faithfully obeying the Lord’s commands to the end. Pastors, teachers, and all believers must fulfill their calling with the heart of David, who protected his sheep even from the lion’s mouth (1 Samuel 17:34–36).
